Students Say

Located in St. Paul鈥檚 scenic Summit Avenue neighborhood, just minutes from the downtowns of Minneapolis and St. Paul, William Mitchell is known for 鈥渨onderful professors,鈥 鈥済enerous scholarships,鈥 and a 鈥済ood balance of legal theory and practical experience.鈥 It offers a flexible program that allows students to attend full time, part time, or on campus/online. In fact, it鈥檚 the first on-campus/online hybrid program at an ABA-approved law school. The hybrid program combines 鈥渋ntensive in-person experiential learning and online coursework that allows students to study the law from anywhere in the world.鈥 This is especially beneficial for 鈥渘on-traditional鈥 students who need to 鈥渨ork and go to school.鈥
Students appreciate the 鈥渆mphasis on practical education.鈥 William Mitchell鈥檚 鈥済reat instructors鈥 focus on 鈥渆xperiential learning,鈥 and there are 鈥渘umerous opportunities to practice skills in the real world and in areas that are of greatest interest to you.鈥 The 鈥渃ourses focus on practical skills, while still teaching the necessary doctrine.鈥 Students praise the 鈥渇ocus on how the concepts will actually apply in practice.鈥 Also, all 鈥淢itchell students take a three-credit hands-on skill-building Advocacy course that focuses on client representation, negotiation, and advocacy skills.鈥 In a lot of the classes, one student notes, 鈥淚 feel like I鈥檓 doing work similar to a 鈥榬eal lawyer.鈥欌 Recently, the program has been especially 鈥渋nnovative, responsive, and creative in reworking the curriculum,鈥 notes another. William Mitchell offers thirteen clinics鈥攊ncluding Business Law, Child Protection, Civil Advocacy, Community Development, Criminal Appeals, Immigration Law, Indian Law, Intellectual Property Law, Law and Psychiatry, Legal Assistance to Minnesota Prisoners (LAMP), Legal Planning Clinic for Tax-Exempt Organizations and Low Income Clients Misdemeanor, and the Reentry Clinic. The Indian law program is of special interest, as the 鈥減rofessors are truly experts in the field.鈥 William Mitchell also offers eleven simulation courses, and seventeen externships, which are 鈥渆ncouraged and highly facilitated,鈥 but some students say popular classes can be hard to get into.
There are big changes afoot at William Mitchell as it combines with Hamline Law, and some students worry that they will lose the small-class environment, but others welcome the change. Either way, 鈥渆veryone at William Mitchell is there to support you in excelling,鈥 says one student. William Mitchell 鈥減rovides highly accessible staff and admin.鈥 Every 鈥渙pportunity you could ask for awaits at your fingertip at this school,鈥 and if you 鈥渞each out to alumni, faculty or staff members, they will give their all in trying to help you succeed.鈥
The 鈥渓ong tradition of the school gives the students a huge alumni base to access,鈥 and 鈥渢he alumni are hungry to help current students.鈥 鈥淢itchell people help out other Mitchell people,鈥 says one student. 鈥淚 could not believe how prevalent this sentiment was when I started.鈥 鈥淚 feel very prepared to enter the legal field upon graduation鈥攂oth in knowledge and support,鈥 notes a 2L. William Mitchell has an especially 鈥渟trong alumni base in the Twin Cities.鈥 For students who wish to stay in 鈥淢innesota or the surrounding states (i.e. North Dakota, Iowa, etc.),鈥 鈥渇inding a job after graduating from William Mitchell is very likely.鈥
