Students Say

It鈥檚 not exactly a secret that The University of Chicago鈥檚 Law School is one of the most highly-regarded and academically rigorous law programs in the entire country, with one of the most competitive acceptance rates to boot. UChicago is 鈥渋nvested in each and every student,鈥 and the 鈥渆xcellent and responsive鈥 administration goes above and beyond to ensure the highest level of success for every student. Students at Chicago are constantly being held to the highest standard of work and preparedness for class, but are 鈥済iven full support with interesting programming/research facilities/beautiful building and library.鈥 鈥淚鈥檒l always be grateful for the tremendous education that I鈥檝e received here,鈥 says a student.
The intimacy of the program (the whole law school is in one building), small class sizes, and the quarter system also make adjusting to law school easier for 1Ls. 鈥淓ven in required 1L courses like contracts, which I have no natural interest in, I鈥檓 blown away by the intellect and teaching skills of our professors,鈥 says one first-year. 鈥淭hat definitely makes up for the fact that we only get to choose one elective our 1L year.鈥 Many of the 1L doctrinal classes are two quarters long (with a switch halfway between two very different professors), allowing students 鈥渢o get a more comprehensive understanding of the subject and different ways of looking at it,鈥 and once they鈥檙e in the clear of their second year, students find it easy to take classes in other departments.
The 鈥渇unny and engaging鈥 faculty is understandably incredible鈥斺淭here really are no bad professors鈥濃攁nd the school places such a high value on the in-class experience that it 鈥渨ill reject a candidate who is a good scholar but bad teacher.鈥 Professors 鈥渢olerate pretty much any viewpoint, and will respect your opinion鈥 which 鈥渇osters a healthy discussion environment and allows people to be themselves.鈥 The fact that their offices are in the student library makes it 鈥渋ncredibly easy to approach them with questions,鈥 and 鈥渢he sheer quantity of preeminent experts who are professors here is staggering.鈥 It is 鈥渁stounding how often you will do a reading and come to find that one of your professors is cited in the reading, or even that they wrote the book.鈥 鈥淗ow often are you taught by federal judges?鈥 asks a 1L. Research librarians are also great and 鈥渁lways available during building hours.鈥
The employment rate of students is 鈥減henomenal鈥 and faculty members are 鈥渆ager to go to bat for their students when it鈥檚 time to get clerkships/jobs.鈥 鈥淚t seems like every week or two, we have major national firms and agencies flying people out to recruit, and almost nobody had any trouble finding a summer job,鈥 says a 1L. Because of the strong job prospects for anyone who graduates, 鈥渢here is not a lot of overt competition.鈥 鈥淲e were given two pieces of advice during orientation: 鈥楧on鈥檛 talk about grades鈥 and 鈥楧on鈥檛 be a jerk,鈥欌 says a student. 鈥淧eople here live by that advice and it makes it a great place to be.鈥

Campus Life

Students Say

Facilities are 鈥渢op-notch鈥 and 鈥渢he location of the school couldn鈥檛 be better.鈥 The area 鈥渕aintains a lower than expected cost of living while providing quick and easy access to many of the best law firms in the country.鈥 Despite the difficult curriculum, UChicago 鈥渄oes a good job of garnering camaraderie among classmates.鈥 There are 鈥渁 lot of great opportunities for extra-curricular involvement鈥 and so much going on at any given time that 鈥渢he biggest challenge is just trying to rule out different options.鈥 Plenty of school-sponsored bonding activities help cement relationships between students. 鈥淧eople are constantly posting jokes/articles/etc on our class Facebook page. There is probably not a single person my year who I couldn鈥檛 identify, and there are very few that I haven鈥檛 at least spoken to once or twice,鈥 says one student. The Green Lounge (the main atrium at the law school) is 鈥渁 very social and fun place to be most of the time,鈥 and the social environment is鈥 really fun, especially once 1L finishes and folks move downtown.鈥
