In part because 鈥渢he professors are experts and heavily published in their fields,鈥 the program here is 鈥渧ery research driven.鈥 However, the professors having successful outside-of-school pursuits causes some students to complain that 鈥減rofessors care more about their research than their teaching.鈥 By and large, however, they are 鈥渨ell-respected in their fields and usually great teachers to boot.鈥 Their real-world experience means for many, 鈥渢hey've been very helpful in learning the nuts and bolts of the profession.鈥 Regardless of what other distractions they have, professors are 鈥渦niversally welcoming and eager to work with students.鈥
That said, the 鈥渄ated鈥 facilities can be 鈥済loomy and depressing.鈥 Being educated in the basement 鈥渇eels oppressive in the dead of winter,鈥 but it鈥檚 not all bad when it comes to the facilities. 鈥淯 of M takes pride in the size of the law library,鈥 one student notes, 鈥渁nd I think that pride is well-earned.鈥 The school also makes it a point to give students a sense for how their studies will apply to the real world. A mock trial competition team, for example, 鈥渋s an example of how the school makes sure to promote the practical aspects of the law and integrate the scholastic elements of the education.鈥
Opportunities in the Twin Cities abound. From a wide range of classes to the 鈥渓arge number of journals鈥 to mock courts, an 鈥渁ctive student organization community,鈥 and a legal community that embraces those in the U of M program, 鈥渢here are more opportunities than I have time in which to partake.鈥 Because this is a top twenty school, 鈥渢here is a strong drive among students for big firm jobs.鈥 At one time that was reflected in the curriculum, too, but these days the school 鈥渉as made significant progress in recognizing and meeting the needs of students interested in public interest, government, and policy or research oriented positions.鈥

But it is the people who win out in the end. 鈥淧eople are happy to be here鈥 for a reason. The faculty and student body alike 鈥渨orks hard to promote an environment of collegiality, where the students work hard with each other as colleagues instead of against each other as competitors.鈥 In fact, 鈥済iven our career choice 鈥 students are not as outwardly assertive as you'd think they'd be.鈥 Even though everyone is working hard to succeed, 鈥渘obody will flaunt their grades or job prospects.鈥 In addition, 鈥渄iversity is truly valued,鈥 especially when it comes to student achievement. Students here 鈥渟upport each other as long as the effort is honest, because it all comes out in finals.鈥
