Students Say

The University of Colorado's Law School is a public program dedicated to providing a solid legal education based on practical training and 鈥渁 positive, growth-focused experience.鈥 The school's amenities include a state-of-the-art LEED-certified law building, 3 research centers (such as the renowned Center聽for Natural Resources, Energy, and the Environment), 7 dual degree programs, and 9 legal clinics (including the Technology Law and Policy Clinic and one of the first American Indian Law clinics in the nation). Additionally, the Silicon Flatirons Center for聽Law, Technology, and Entrepreneurship 鈥渋s at the forefront of entrepreneurialism, technology, and telecommunications鈥 and is 鈥渁 huge asset to the school.鈥 These create 鈥渄iverse course opportunities [that] can help you develop skills that you need if you're willing to branch out.鈥 Amidst all of these options, students participate in 5 to 7 mandatory courses through the school's Externship Program, working under close supervision and instruction from an attorney or judge during that time. Similarly, they also sign the school's聽Public Service Pledge, committing to at least聽50 hours聽of law-related public service work. These 鈥渙pportunities in government work and clerkships are fantastic,鈥 says a student. Plus, credit鈥攁nd even sometimes funding鈥攊s available for students competing on Colorado Law's moot court or mock trial teams. Overall, the school has excelled at 鈥減utting together classes that mesh really well鈥 with the goals and ideals of its students.

At the helm of these courses are professors who 鈥渃learly care about students 鈥, even going so far as to video chat or talk on the phone when they are traveling and coming in on the weekends to meet with students.鈥 They 鈥渄o a great job of promoting interest in their respective fields,鈥 and students cite feeling 鈥渃omfortable to speak up in the classroom and engage in dialogue with each other and the professors.鈥 While 鈥渃lassrooms vary in style, [they] tend to be cooperative learning environments with relatively high engagement.鈥 Many 鈥渦se very interactive class structures that include debates based on assigned roles.鈥 In addition to the professors, the administration 鈥渋s receptive to our complaints,鈥 creating 鈥渁 setting for incredible learning and growth.鈥

Campus Life

Students Say

Being 鈥渁 small school in a big legal market, the community here feels 鈥渋ncredibly warm and supportive,鈥 and it features a 鈥渓iberal nature 鈥 [that] is very clear and present.鈥 Moreover, 鈥渢he culture is congenial and respectful,鈥 and 鈥減eople are passionate and excited to do things both in and out of school.鈥 This 鈥渨ell-balanced environment鈥 is paired with an equally balanced range of student representation: 鈥淭he administration has focused on recruiting students with varied backgrounds both in terms of ethnicity or sexual orientation and in terms of life experience.鈥 And regardless of where students are from, many regularly engage 鈥渟ocially outside of school, whether it be happy hours, speaker series, or skiing and hiking.鈥 Many are quick to point out that Boulder 鈥渉as a lot to offer outdoorsy types,鈥 but even those who aren't as active that 鈥渢he view of the mountains is soothing.鈥 For the more urban-inclined, 鈥淒enver is a booming metropolitan area just a short bus ride away from campus.鈥 Back on campus, 鈥渢he facilities are amazing,鈥 and 鈥渢he classrooms, library, and study rooms have always been kept clean and available for law students to utilize.鈥 Additionally, the three-story law library is housed within the building, and 鈥渁ccess to 鈥 non-print resources is top of the line.鈥 One student explains, 鈥淚've never wanted to access a source and been unable to do so.鈥 Overall, this collaborative culture means 鈥渆veryone wants everyone else to do well,鈥 and there is 鈥渁 collegial atmosphere that lends itself more to intellectual curiosity than concern for grades.鈥
