Located in Chicago, The John Marshall Law School is a relatively large, independent law school with options for both daytime and evening programs. The intellectual property program is strong, and the writing program is one of the school鈥檚 greatest strengths and a cornerstone of the practice-ready curriculum, which ensures that 鈥渨hen the students are ready to practice, they can hit the ground running.鈥 鈥淓veryone really works with you to make sure you understand what you are doing,鈥 says a student. John Marshall provides work study opportunities for students to get paid for legal work in any nonprofit or government agency, and a variety of clinical internship/externship opportunities 鈥済eared towards teaching students the practical skills needed to successfully practice law in a variety of settings.鈥
In addition to the 鈥渞eally quite strong鈥 academics, the faculty comprises 鈥渧ery knowledgeable professors who have considerable real world experience that benefits their ability to relate material to students.鈥 Professors are 鈥渧ery welcoming when you come to see them鈥 and 鈥渢hey enjoy working through issues with students.鈥 As one might expect from a school designed for students at all points of their careers, the incredibly flexible school 鈥渋s willing to accommodate each student鈥檚 individual academic interests/goals.鈥 The law librarians and staff are also 鈥渆xtremely helpful.鈥 鈥淎lthough there are more required courses than other law schools, at the end of the day they are valuable and allow a student to explore the type of attorney they want to be,鈥 says a 2L. 鈥淭here are no undeserved grades awarded at our school and it prompts each of us students to give our best performance.鈥
The school has 鈥渆xtensive resources鈥 including the writing center, and a helpful alumni network 鈥減racticing in just about every area of law you can think of鈥 that aids the Career Services Office in getting students into jobs. 鈥淚f you plan on working in the northern Illinois region, you should strongly consider attending JMLS,鈥 says a student of the school鈥檚 mainly regional reputation. Many students say that 鈥渁t times the school could be more organized鈥 and 鈥渋nformation could be distributed to students in a more timely manner, so things aren鈥檛 so rushed.鈥 Still, 鈥渢he school really cares about the students, and it shows.鈥 鈥淚 have always felt that every single employee at JMLS is rooting for me to thrive professionally and personally,鈥 says a 1L.

About half of the students are full-time students who tend to be more 鈥渙utgoing鈥 and make friends with one another; the other half is composed of commuters who, 鈥渢hough friendly people, have to spend more time elsewhere.鈥 Many see this diversity of the student population as 鈥渢he school鈥檚 greatest strength鈥 and 鈥渟chool pride is always fostered and witnessed each day.鈥 Student organizations are very active and 鈥渢here are always ways to get involved and social gatherings.鈥
