West Virginia University鈥檚 College of Law provides students with a 鈥減ersonal, yet professional, atmosphere,鈥 where the 鈥渆mphasis [is] on being a functional lawyer.鈥 The dirt-cheap tuition (for in-state residents, who comprise the overwhelming majority of students here) and 鈥減assionate, intelligent, and helpful鈥 people that make up the faculty, staff, and student body, all converge to offer a 鈥済reat value鈥 to the happy students that go here.
As one might expect from the only law school in the state, the school has 鈥渁 great relationship with the state and state bar.鈥 This you-rub-my-back-and-I鈥檒l-rub yours relationship leads one second-year student to comment, 鈥淚f you plan to practice law in West Virginia, the College of Law is a brilliant choice鈥攚ho better to learn from than the justices and lobbyists who wrote the law?鈥 Some of the greatest strengths of WVU Law are the clinical programs. 鈥淭he school offers [nine] clinics ranging from general, family, tax, energy, and entrepreneurship. Clinics are offered to all 3L students; some clinics are open to 2Ls.鈥 Most students do choose to practice within the state after graduation, which helps the school focus both its curriculum and its alumni network with stellar results. But there are 鈥渄iverse courses in a variety of practice areas, and many students leave the state and successfully practice law in other states.鈥 Career Services is 鈥減articularly strong鈥 in placing students in jobs throughout West Virginia, attributable in part to 鈥渁n active on-campus interview program and in part to WVU鈥檚 intimate connection with the West Virginia legal community.鈥
The College of Law enjoys faculty members who are a combination of 鈥渋nspirational, well-published, and leading state authorities in their subjects.鈥 Professors 鈥渃are about students as individuals鈥 and 鈥渆ncourage鈥nd help them to achieve whatever types of goals that individual has.鈥 All teachers 鈥渒now material well and convey the information in an easy-to-understand way.鈥 People are torn as to the efficacy of the Legal Research and Writing Program, which has undergone a recent revamping, but the Academic Excellence Center is available to 鈥減rovide an essential foundation for struggling students.鈥
The administration at West Virginia University鈥檚 College of Law is 鈥渧ery laid-back鈥 and follows the same open-door policy as the faculty. Although there are around 400 students, the administration 鈥渟eemingly knows everyone鈥檚 names,鈥 and it鈥檚 not unusual to see 鈥渂oth faculty and administrators lounging with students during lunch hours.鈥 Students share some grievances regarding the rather clunky and inflexible registration system, saying 鈥測ou get the classes at the times they pick, no exceptions.鈥 Fortunately, the diversity of classes expands in the second year of law school. While students have said in the past that the online course registration process can feel like a 鈥済ladiatorial battle to get into the classes you like,鈥 there have been recent improvements to the WVU online registration process.
The law school was 鈥渞enovated [in 2014], receiving a $26 million dollar addition.鈥 The classrooms within are 鈥渇antastic,鈥 which is also how students describe WVU Law鈥檚 staff鈥攑articularly the 鈥渧ery friendly and helpful鈥 library staff, which includes 鈥渁 librarian that will literally help you at any hour of the night (she鈥檒l even be your Facebook friend).鈥

Campus Life

Students Say

The camaraderie among WVU Law students lends to an atmosphere that is 鈥渓ike one big family.鈥 鈥淲est Virginia has a small bar and we will all be practicing together after graduation, so everyone treats each other with respect,鈥 says a 2L. Students 鈥渇orm study groups, help each other out, and much more.鈥 鈥淲e do not see one another as competition, but as colleagues,鈥 says a student. The student body (and the faculty) is 鈥渘ot very racially diverse,鈥 鈥渘ot too competitive,鈥 and there are 鈥渆xcellent relations amongst students.鈥
The school provides a good deal of social events for students to take part in. And take part they do: Students 鈥渨ork during the week, and cut loose on the weekends.鈥 WVU football is the fulcrum of many social activities, and there is a fair amount of alcohol involved in the ample tailgating and extracurricular activities on offer here. Luckily, Morgantown is a 鈥渟ocial city,鈥 providing 鈥渁mple opportunities to explore your social life to any extent to which you desire,鈥 though students note it does help to have a car.
