Students Say

Syracuse University鈥檚 College of Law is armed with a 鈥渂eautiful鈥 campus, 鈥渂rand new facilities鈥 and 鈥渃hallenging鈥 courses. Students here love that they have access to a 鈥渄iverse range of programs and specialties.鈥 After all, that鈥檚 a 鈥済reat way to [discover] which areas of the law interest you.鈥 Students also 鈥渁ppreciate the fact that Syracuse 鈥減laces strong emphasis on writing and experiential learning.鈥 These courses 鈥渢rain law students to be lawyers, not just graduates of law school.鈥 And, in turn, they allow 鈥淪yracuse graduates [to be] more competitive in the job market.鈥

In general, students find their law professors to be 鈥渧ery knowledgeable,鈥 鈥渆xtremely competent,鈥 and 鈥渁t the forefront of their respective legal fields.鈥 It鈥檚 also evident that they really want students to become the 鈥渂est attorneys possible.鈥 Indeed, 鈥渢hey want you to succeed and will make themselves available in order for that to happen.鈥 As one student shares, 鈥淚 [never] fe[lt] afraid to ask a question in any of my classes...If I went to a professor鈥檚 office hours they were always there and would help me to understand a topic.鈥

Unfortunately, Syracuse鈥檚 administration gets mixed reviews. This is partially due to the fact that there鈥檚 been a lot of turnover recently. Many people feel that the newer hires are 鈥渓ess focused on student satisfaction than the previous administration, and...more concerned with alumni relations and donations.鈥 Conversely, other students steadfastly assert that the current people in charge have a 鈥渃lear vision of where they would like [Syracuse] to be down the road and how they will [get] there in the coming years.鈥

With regards to job prospects, many individuals note that the university鈥檚 鈥渁lumni connections are out of this world.鈥 Unfortunately, a handful of students also bemoan career services and suggest that it鈥檚 鈥渓acking.鈥 Some complain that they鈥檙e 鈥渙nly willing to help students with the highest GPA.鈥 Many students are also frustrated by the fact that the major focus is on positions in 鈥渃entral New York鈥 since that鈥檚 where the school has the strongest connections. One last lament, 鈥淭he new director of the office has no people skills. The only person that will work with students directly is the most senior member of the staff, but she is so overworked, that you have to wonder how long she will last.鈥

Campus Life

Students Say

Law students at Syracuse view their classmates as 鈥渁mbitious鈥 and 鈥渆ager.鈥 Some grumble that these attributes (and the nature of law school), bring out the 鈥渃ompetitive鈥 side of their peers. However, others insist that their classmates feel like a 鈥渃ohesive bunch.鈥 As this pleased student shares, 鈥淚 have been welcomed into the student body with open arms, invited to numerous events and activities, and been thoroughly engaged both inside and outside the classroom.鈥

Students do warn that Syracuse itself feels 鈥渄ark and cold鈥 for a good portion of the year. Fortunately, 鈥渢he school does a lot to promote mental health in the winter and provides free coffee and breakfast weekly during the academic year and daily during finals.鈥 Additionally, there are 鈥減lenty of formal networking opportunities鈥 of which to take advantage. And there鈥檚 a 鈥渂road range of [clubs] to get involved [with]鈥 as well. One final note, the 鈥渓aw school itself is located right next to the Carrier Dome, and undergraduate sporting events get priority parking.鈥 Hence, it can be a bit of a headache 鈥渢o get to...class [or simply study]...during football or basketball season.鈥
