Students Say

Students come to University of Miami School of Law for its 鈥渁mazing resources and faculty鈥 and it鈥檚 鈥渙pportunities for networking,鈥 but mostly they come because 鈥渋t鈥檚 in Miami.鈥 鈥淟ocation, Location, Location,鈥 one student says succinctly. 鈥淢iami is a vibrant building city with a lot to offer,鈥 and students here have direct 鈥渁ccess to Miami鈥檚 job market.鈥 UM enjoys great 鈥渘ame recognition across South Florida鈥 and has 鈥渁 huge alumni base who are loyal to graduating students.鈥 If you want to practice Law in or near Miami, 鈥渢here鈥檚 no school that鈥檚 better rooted in this area.鈥 鈥淭he campus is absolutely gorgeous鈥攁 pleasure to study by the lake, my personal favorite,鈥 one student says. 鈥淚t鈥檚 sometimes hard to stay in the Law Library all day with such a beautiful and vibrant campus just outside the doors,鈥 one 2L explains. 鈥淵ou have to stay really focused.鈥
The 鈥渢op-notch鈥 professors at UM 鈥渃annot be beat.鈥 The 鈥済enuinely nice鈥 faculty is 鈥渁 perfect blend of former judges, legal scholars, and adjunct faculty who are at the top of their respective fields in the private sector and judiciary.鈥 While 鈥渢he professors are extremely accessible,鈥 since 鈥渋t is a bigger school鈥 鈥渙ne-to-one time with the professors is a little difficult to come by.鈥 Professors 鈥渢ruly want the students to learn and succeed鈥 and frequently 鈥渁re national leaders in their field and are greatly respected across the nation.鈥 鈥淚f you are interested in a few specific areas of law that Miami is known for this is the perfect place.鈥 For example, 鈥淢iami鈥檚 litigation skills program has all the major judges and attorneys in Florida,鈥 and 鈥淯M鈥檚 resources in Health Law and its reputation as a Health Law up and coming powerhouse should be emphasized!鈥 One student chimes in to say, 鈥淚 would add art law (with Prof. Urice); maritime law (with Prof. Oxman); and criminal law (with Profs Franks, Rose, Basquez, & Graham) as additional specialties.鈥
While the faculty get high praise, students feel the administration 鈥渘eed to be replaced forthwith if the school hopes not to completely destroy its reputation.鈥 Some students say the administration will 鈥渘ickel and dime you for every penny you have,鈥 but 鈥渟tudent organizations are poorly funded鈥 and 鈥渢he Career Development Office does very little to aid in the search for employment.鈥 Still, there are ten attorney advisors on staff at the CDO, and Miami Law also provides services like the Student Development Program and the Mindfulness in Law Program with students鈥 personal and professional development in mind. While some students think the dean is 鈥渦napproachable鈥 and seems to 鈥減refer to never be bothered,鈥 Dean White does hold monthly town hall style meetings to meet with first-year and upper division students and 鈥渉as used her network and reputation to make big in-roads to the New York and D.C. marketplaces for opportunities for students.鈥 鈥淭he law library is pretty retro-looking鈥 and 鈥渢he physical buildings that make up the law school are very old.鈥 Still, they are filled with 鈥渃utting edge鈥 technology and the campus overall 鈥渋s beautiful.鈥 One highlight that needs to be mentioned is 鈥渢he Litigation Skills Program.鈥 鈥淣o other university that I know in the area offers such a well-structured program,鈥 one happy student says.

Campus Life

Students Say

The 鈥渧ery intelligent and competitive鈥 students at UM 鈥渁re drawn from all over the world.鈥 鈥淎verage student age鈥 at UM 鈥渋s pretty low compared to most law schools.鈥 While the school is diverse 鈥渞elative to other law schools鈥 (the school reports that 37 percent of the 2014 JD class identified as members of a minority group or as multiethnic), students feel that 鈥渋t is not diverse at all relative to Miami,鈥 鈥渦nless you count the many different shades of white.鈥 UM has a more a relaxed atmosphere than most law schools. 鈥淓veryone wears shorts and the campus has a weekly farmers market.鈥 鈥淭he university is located where vibrant Miami, beautiful Coral Gables, and quaint Coconut Grove meet,鈥 one student explains. 鈥淭here is always something going on around the university鈥 and the city 鈥渉as an amazing energy.鈥 Students keep busy at studies, but 鈥渨hen you do have free time, you feel like you鈥檙e on vacation.鈥 The undergraduate campus is 鈥渁 stone鈥檚 throw away鈥 and the UM 鈥渂asketball and football teams are excellent and provide a welcome break from studying.鈥
