Students Say

Law students at the University of North Dakota love that they can receive a 鈥済ood education-鈥 one replete with 鈥減ersonal attention,鈥 all at a relatively 鈥渓ow cost.鈥 Though the academics are 鈥渃hallenging,鈥 they are 鈥淸absent of] the cutthroat environment鈥 so often prevalent at other law schools. This can partially be attributed to the fact that 鈥淯ND has largely abandoned the traditional socratic method [in favor of] giv[ing]...professors [the] freedom to teach how they best see fit.鈥

Regardless of their chosen methods, law professors at North Dakota seem to be universally adored. And why shouldn鈥檛 they be? After all, they 鈥渁re not only passionate...about their subject matter but they are easily accessible.鈥 Indeed, they 鈥渕ake an effort to be available to students to help [them] with any concerns [they] might have.鈥 Most faculty members are even 鈥渨illing to work with your schedule to accommodate a meeting time.鈥 Just as vital, UND professors are often 鈥渧ery encouraging.鈥

Additionally, many students rush to highlight the externship program, noting that it鈥檚 鈥渙ne of the best things UND has to offer.鈥 This is largely due to the fact that the law school maintains 鈥減artnership[s] with organizations across the state.鈥 In turn, this makes it incredibly 鈥渆asy to gain real life legal experience before graduation.鈥 Students also applaud the 鈥渨ide variety of Indian Law classes鈥 available and note that 鈥渢he faculty who teach those [courses] are [well-]known in the field. However, they bemoan the fact that 鈥渆lectives outside of Indian Law are very limited.鈥

The dearth of electives is the unfortunate result of 鈥渞ecent budget cuts [that forced] the administration [to cut] quality programs and remov[e] adjunct professors.鈥 As this student shares with a resounding sigh, 鈥淲hen I enrolled at the school there were numerous options for specialization classes, and those have since been taken away...The school reduced the amount of capped enrollment/experiential classes because of budget cuts, and are not willing to hire an adjunct, or find any alternatives for students.鈥 Fortunately, these budget cuts don鈥檛 seem to have affected UND鈥檚 facilities. Students deem both the classrooms and the library to be 鈥渆xcellent.鈥

Students Say

There鈥檚 no denying that a 鈥渟trong community feel鈥 reverberates through the halls of UND Law School. Some individuals attribute this to the simple fact that North Dakota is a 鈥渟mall state.鈥 Hence, the majority of students here 鈥渨ill be working with [their] classmates for the rest of their lives.鈥 Of course, no matter the reason, everyone benefits from an environment that鈥檚 both 鈥渃ooperative鈥 and exceedingly 鈥渇riendly.鈥 For example, 2Ls and 3Ls routinely 鈥渟hare [their] outlines鈥 and students 鈥渁re quick to offer tips and tricks on specific classes鈥 in general.

Importantly, 鈥渢here are numerous student groups鈥 with which you can get involved. And the law school itself hosts countless 鈥渟ocial events...that have great turnouts and provide a fun and welcoming experience for new students.鈥 For example, lots of people enjoy participating in 鈥渢he malpractice bowl [wherein the law school] plays the med school in a flag football game.鈥 Other popular activities include the 鈥渙ver the hump party [hosted by 2Ls]...[the] art auction and law school prom.鈥 A number of students also attend various 鈥減ub crawls鈥 throughout the academic year. Finally, though Grand Forks 鈥渃an take some getting used to if you are used to bigger cities,鈥 we鈥檝e been assured that 鈥渋t still has a lot to offer.鈥
