Students Say

The 鈥減erfectly sized鈥 University of Arkansas鈥擫ittle Rock William H. Bowen School of Law is located 鈥渞ight in the heart of downtown Little Rock鈥濃斺渢he economic and government center of the state鈥濃攁nd it is thoroughly 鈥渢ied into the local community through its connections with legislators, judges, government agencies, and private firms.鈥 Clerkships and externships are 鈥渂ountiful.鈥 Access to part-time jobs at law firms is 鈥渟econd to none.鈥 Other perks at UALR include four clinical programs, five dual-degree programs, and 鈥渁 bargain-basement price.鈥 There are around twenty different areas of concentration here and some students tell us that 鈥渢he overall breadth of course choices makes it possible to study almost any topic you find particularly interesting.鈥 Others grumble that course selection is actually pretty limited. 鈥淪tudents here get a strong, basic legal education,鈥 says a 2L. 鈥淗owever, if you want more variety in more subject-specific courses, you won鈥檛 really find them at this school.鈥
Professors 鈥渆xpect you to come to class prepared.鈥 The faculty is 鈥渉ighly qualified, and there is a great mix of鈥 adjuncts who teach specialized courses. Not every professor is great but most are 鈥渄edicated鈥 teachers 鈥渨ho really want to see their students learn.鈥 鈥淭hey make sure we understand,鈥 says a 1L, 鈥渁nd if we don鈥檛, they go back over it.鈥 Students also laud the legal writing program and say that the 鈥渨riting instructors epitomize true excellence in their fields.鈥 Outside of class, faculty members are reportedly 鈥渧ery approachable.鈥 鈥淭he student body is small enough that you can have ample one-on-one time with the profs after hours,鈥 reports a 3L, 鈥渋f you鈥檙e brave enough.鈥 Student opinion concerning the administration is drastically split. Some students call management 鈥渋ncompetent.鈥 鈥淭he school is run like a low-budget movie set,鈥 charges a 2L. Other students contend that UALR is 鈥渧ery well-run.鈥 鈥淭he administration is very helpful and accessible,鈥 they contend, and the deans make 鈥渁n effort to hear student comments and feedback, and implement changes accordingly.鈥
The law school itself is 鈥渦gly-looking from the outside鈥 and it鈥檚 鈥渋n a rough section of town.鈥 The facility is 鈥渧ery pretty鈥 on the inside, though, 鈥渨ith great marble stairs鈥 and 鈥渘ice views鈥 from the upper levels. Incidentally, we think the 鈥渉aunted floors鈥 are just a legend. 鈥淐lassrooms are top-notch鈥 鈥渨ith plenty of outlets鈥 for laptops. 鈥淭his law school is one of the only schools in the nation with state-of-the-art video lecture capture in nearly every room,鈥 beams a 3L. 鈥淢issed something in class? Watch it again, including any slides or videos that were shown.鈥 The building is also 鈥渇ully equipped for WiFi access and remote printing.鈥 There鈥檚 a fabulous student lounge, too. Even 鈥減arking is awesome,鈥 which is something law students at many schools complain about to high heaven. 鈥淥verall, our school works to provide us with a comfortable environment,鈥 says a 2L. The spacious library is 鈥渢he law library for the state of Arkansas, so it is excellent,鈥 too. The staff is 鈥減henomenal.鈥 It鈥檚 a public library, though, and 鈥渢here are definitely some pro se misfits who can be distracting.鈥

Campus Life

Students Say

Some students call UALR 鈥渁 diverse school.鈥 Others argue, 鈥淭here is not much diversity,鈥 beyond a solid contingent of nontraditional, older students. Views of the academic atmosphere also vary. 鈥淭here are some students who are very competitive,鈥 relates a 3L, 鈥渁nd there are others like me who do the best that I can regardless of what others do.鈥 Other students say, 鈥淭here is no rivalry鈥 when it come to grades. 鈥淭here is a definite sense that we are all in this together,鈥 says a 1L, 鈥渁nd most everyone is willing to help out a fellow student if that students asks.鈥
Socially, it鈥檚 鈥渁 very congenial atmosphere.鈥 鈥淭here are plenty of student organizations.鈥 In addition, there are 鈥渨onderful lunch meetings and seminars, as well as dinner programs on a regular basis that accommodate both part-time and full-time students.鈥 鈥淭he school is intimate and definitely allows for getting acquainted with people,鈥 reports a 2L, though 鈥渋f you鈥檙e not from Arkansas it is a lot harder to find a social niche.鈥 Also, 鈥渢here does seem to be a line鈥 between the students who find it 鈥渉ard turning down the temptation of going out鈥 and those who would rather crack the books all day, every day. Beyond the confines of the law school, Little Rock is 鈥渢he largest city in Arkansas,鈥 but it鈥檚 鈥渟till a small town鈥 that approximates 鈥渁 suburb鈥 when compared to a lot of bigger cities. 鈥淭here is not a whole lot to do in Little Rock outside of school,鈥 explains a 2L. 鈥淭here is a downtown area with bars and shops, but nothing huge.鈥
