Students Say

Students at Ole Miss love the combination of 鈥渁 down-home, small-town atmosphere where everyone knows your name鈥 and a law degree that is 鈥済iven much credit within the state.鈥 Though 鈥渁cademically strenuous,鈥 the school鈥檚 鈥渓aid-back atmosphere 鈥減revails, and students praise the 鈥渆asily accessible鈥 staff, the 鈥渓arge student mall with plenty of couches and chairs for discussions between classes,鈥 and the 鈥減rofessors with awesome senses of humor.鈥 By all accounts, Ole Miss is not a school that 鈥渕akes you feel like they are trying to weed you out.鈥 As one student explains, 鈥淚 love the dynamics of the classes and the size of the student body. It is nice to be friends with 2Ls and 3Ls and not feel like a freshman again.鈥 鈥淓veryone in the administration is incredibly friendly and helpful,鈥 a classmate adds. 鈥淚f you have any question, even if it has nothing to do with their particular job, they will do everything they can to get you the right answer.鈥 Professors here hail from 鈥渁 broad diversity of backgrounds鈥 and 鈥渁re all extremely knowledgeable and very experienced.鈥 Not only do they 鈥減resent the material in an entertaining way,鈥 they 鈥渢ake a special interest鈥 in students, 鈥渨hich can help build up [students鈥橾 confidence and help them to excel.鈥
The professors at Ole Miss are a major reason why its students say the school is a 鈥済reat value.鈥 鈥淚t is not nearly as expensive to go to school here as the other schools to which I applied or was accepted,鈥 says one student. 鈥淚 can still get pretty much any job I want coming out of Ole Miss, yet I have zero debt.鈥 Other students, however, temper such expectations, noting that while Ole Miss鈥 鈥淐areer Services Office is always there to help with a r茅sum茅 or to provide Tylenol during exams,鈥 securing a job outside of Mississippi can be an uphill battle. That said, this situation seems to be on the upswing thanks to the school鈥檚 鈥済reat relationship with alumni鈥 and also in that 鈥淥le Miss changed their grading curve [a few years ago] and that has significantly helped those who are looking to get a job out of state.鈥
Students consistently report that the faculty is one of the school鈥檚 鈥済reatest strengths.鈥 鈥淭hey take away the mundane, stereotypical experience of law school and present the material in an entertaining way without compromising the integrity of the institution,鈥 says one student. Many feel that 鈥渢here is a lot of potential in the legal writing and research classes鈥; however, they are damaged by 鈥渢he lack of communication between...departments.鈥 Others would like 鈥渕ore classes to choose from,鈥 particularly in the area of entertainment law. Students are divided on the school鈥檚 aesthetics, finding that the 鈥済reat library鈥 is 鈥渆xtremely up to date with the latest technology鈥 while the building itself is 鈥渘ot very pretty鈥 and 鈥渟omewhat outdated.鈥 A 1L provides some perspective, explaining that 鈥渢he law school building would be aesthetically pleasing at most major schools, but when compared to the columned architecture and tree-lined walkways of the rest of the campus, you can immediately tell it is a relic of the early 1970s. Instead of being 鈥榩ostmodern,鈥 it simply looks out of place.鈥 However, 鈥渁 new state-of-the-art building鈥 鈥渨ill soon be under construction.鈥

Campus Life

Students Say

Ole Miss students emphasize that theirs is a 鈥渞elaxed learning environment,鈥 one that 鈥減romotes collaboration between students instead of the cutthroat competition that you hear about at other law schools.鈥 The school divides 1Ls into sections of 鈥渁bout sixty students.鈥 While this can be 鈥済ood for making friends鈥 and forming 鈥渟tudy groups and TV nights,鈥 it can at times seem 鈥渓ike high school all over again with the distinct social circles.鈥 鈥淚n true Southern form,鈥 law students at Ole Miss 鈥渓ike to work hard and play hard,鈥 and 鈥淟ife at the law school is very social. Everyone is a part of LSSB (Law School Student Body) and participates in 鈥渂ar reviews.鈥 Also, students attend Ole Miss football games and tailgate every weekend in the fall.鈥 When they do take a break, Ole Miss students find themselves in a pleasant location. The university鈥檚 campus is 鈥渂eautiful,鈥 and hometown Oxford is 鈥渁 unique place鈥 with 鈥渁 healthy social scene.鈥 Though most will tell you that 鈥渄rinking is a big part of social life鈥 here, popular opinion states that 鈥測ou can absolutely have a good time without drinking.鈥 鈥淭here are two great new movie theaters, and there are plans to open a 鈥楴ew Square,鈥欌 says one student. 鈥淥xford is constantly growing, and hopefully there will be a lot more for students to do soon.鈥 One thing that students agree could be improved a more 鈥渄iverse student body.鈥
