Students Say

According to its students, Georgia State University鈥檚 College of Law offers 鈥渁 top-quality law school education without the aggressive environment.鈥 Of particular note is the school鈥檚 鈥渢op-notch part-time program full of talented students.鈥 鈥淕SU COL offers an incredible value to students鈥攕trong academic reputation with a low cost of attendance,鈥 says a 2L. 鈥淭uition is unbelievable,鈥 adds a 1L. 鈥淸With] only about $10,000 a year for a very strong education, you can graduate with minimal debt, enabling you to begin a law career of your choice.鈥 The 鈥渁mazing鈥 professors are 鈥渄iverse and open-minded.鈥 鈥淚mpressively, professors believe in the program and voluntarily teach evening classes,鈥 says a 2L. 鈥淚 am challenged every day by brilliant professors who make me think in ways I never thought possible,鈥 explains a 1L. Most students find that the administration is 鈥渧ery responsive鈥 and committed to ensuring quality instruction and improving academic instruction.鈥 Others students note, 鈥淭hey are always willing to go the extra mile and show concern for the success of their students.鈥
Students appreciate GSU COL鈥檚 鈥渇lexible class hours,鈥 particularly those involved in the very popular part-time program. Some feel that, due to this program, there is 鈥渁 weighting toward evening classes鈥 and that those evening classes are 鈥渨here the best adjuncts teach.鈥 That said, others believe the 鈥渆mphasis on the part-time program is a bit overstated.鈥 鈥淚t鈥檚 available and great, but the full-time day classes are on par with any you will find,鈥 says a 3L. Regardless of which program students partake in, the 鈥渆ffective鈥 courses offered are roundly praised. 鈥淭he health law program is dynamic and first-rate,鈥 says a 2L. 鈥淐harity Scott is a legend in this city and any future health care attorney would be lucky to take a class with her.鈥 鈥淭he school is not afraid to try new ideas,鈥 adds another 2L. 鈥淚鈥檝e taken 鈥楲aw and the Internet,鈥 which is all about legal issues and the online community,鈥 says one student, and another tells us, 鈥淚鈥檓 now in a new non-traditional class that combines Wills, Trusts, Estates, and Taxes, in which the students form their own law firms and actually prepare all of the documents as if in the real-world.鈥
By and large, students are very happy with their decision to attend GSU COL. However, when it comes to the school鈥檚 Career Services Office, some believe 鈥渢hey could do a better job.鈥 Despite this, 鈥渢he access to the Atlanta legal community鈥 that GSU鈥檚 location offers goes a long way in making up for any career office shortcomings. 鈥淚 have clerked for a year with a Superior Court judge, worked for a professor as a GRA, competed in a National Moot Court competition, become president of numerous societies, and have a job lined up after graduation,鈥 says a 3L.
With a prime spot in downtown Atlanta, GSU鈥檚 location allows students to 鈥渨alk to the 11th Circuit, Supreme Court, and Northern District of Georgia courthouses.鈥 On campus, the law school鈥檚 buildings aren鈥檛 quite as appreciated as the university鈥檚 metropolitan location. 鈥淭he technology available in the classrooms and libraries [is] high quality, but the classrooms themselves are not,鈥 says a 1L. 鈥淭he current law school is old, and was never meant to be used for anything aside from administrative purposes.鈥 However, construction has been completed on a new鈥攁nd 鈥渕uch more aesthetically pleasing鈥濃攂uilding. 鈥淲e are all looking forward to . . . the new law school,鈥 which opened in Summer 2015, 鈥渂ecause a new building will give the professors and students more opportunities to show just how amazing the school really is!鈥 says a 2L.

Campus Life

Students Say

Thanks to GSU COL鈥檚 non-traditional student population, 鈥渢he school [has] a more diverse student body than most other schools鈥 since 鈥渢he introduction of older students with more work experience adds a great deal to the classroom experience.鈥 While 鈥渢he part-time (evening) students work well together,鈥 among full-time students, 鈥渢he competition is still severe,鈥 though it is 鈥渘ot as cutthroat as it is at other law schools.鈥 Students attribute this 鈥渢o the evening students being older, with full-time jobs.鈥 鈥淭he younger students tend to be more social with one another,鈥 explains a 2L. 鈥淭he older students, who come from the working world, are almost entirely focused on school.鈥 A 3L gives a more specific breakdown: 鈥淔irst year is difficult and competitive. However, the second and third years are much more cooperative and fun. Students begin to help each other out in terms of outlines, readings, etc.鈥 Regardless of whether students are part of the part-time or full-time programs, all agree that their 鈥渇ellow classmates have been the best thing about law school鈥攖hey鈥檙e a great bunch of people.鈥
鈥淥n the social side, there is a substantial group of part-time students that get together monthly on an ad-hoc basis, purely for social time, usually with spouses or significant others,鈥 says a 2L. 鈥淚 was pleasantly surprised.鈥 Others find that the urban campus has a negative effect on socializing. 鈥淪o many people are spread out all over the city鈥hat no one stays around to socialize after class鈥 says a 1L. 鈥淚f you just go to class and go home I think you will miss out on the social life,鈥 says a 2L. 鈥淚f you make an effort to meet people then it is easy to make friends.鈥
