Students Say

Located in beautiful Knoxville, the University of Tennessee College of Law offers a great education at an affordable price. Students find the program 鈥渕entally stimulating鈥 and leave confident in their 鈥渁bilities to practice law after graduation.鈥 The university boasts 鈥渟mall class sizes,鈥 which make 鈥渓earning more personable and focused.鈥 Students benefit not only from small class sizes, but big-name lecturers: The university has hosted lectures by three U.S. Supreme Court justices in the past five years. Students roundly praise the 鈥減ractical skills classes that allow鈥 them to 鈥減ractice what they learn in theory.鈥 The clinic program鈥攚hich is longest running clinical program in the country鈥斺漚llows for real-world experience,鈥 and may be 鈥渙ne of the greatest things about UT.鈥 The university also offers a wealth of additional practical experience including externship opportunities, moot court, mock trial and Tennessee Law Review, which are 鈥渋nvaluable.鈥
UT is known for its 鈥済reat community鈥 and 鈥渟upportive and kind atmosphere,鈥 which offer a wealth of opportunities for students. Students say faculty and staff are 鈥渢op notch.鈥 Professors 鈥渃ome from all over the country鈥 and 鈥渉ave diverse experiences and teaching styles.鈥 However, students note that the university 鈥渃ould work on finding more ethnically diverse professors.鈥 That said, the 鈥減rofessors are all extremely qualified and have practical experience in the courses they teach.鈥 They are 鈥渄edicated educators first and foremost.鈥 There is an emphasis on 鈥渃lassroom dialogue, debate, and interaction鈥 that 鈥渓eads to a better learning experience.鈥 Students find their professors to be 鈥渁ccessible at most hours and are prompt in getting back to you.鈥 As one student notes: 鈥淧rofessors regularly volunteered to listen to oral arguments for moot court teams and offer their critiques, generally had an open-door policy for questions after class, and were happy to just stop and chat in the halls.鈥 The 鈥渟taff, faculty, and students all provide a collegial atmosphere which facilitates outstanding legal scholarship,鈥 and the school encourages its students to give back, emphasizing 鈥渢he importance of pro bono鈥 work.
The administration is also 鈥渧ery accessible and open,鈥 and they 鈥渁re willing to help in any way they can.鈥 Considerate of its students鈥 financial needs, the financial aid office emails students regularly about 鈥渟cholarship opportunities鈥 as well as 鈥済raduate assistant positions鈥 that may cover a student鈥檚 鈥渆ntire tuition.鈥 Students find the Career Center 鈥渧ery helpful.鈥 The 鈥淐areer Center actually helps you find a job (unlike many schools鈥 career centers),鈥 notes one student.
The university also 鈥渄oes a great job with the type of student it admits.鈥 鈥淭here has never been a time that I have felt like I could not ask a classmate for help or an outline,鈥 says a current student. The culture at the university is 鈥渟upportive, friendly, helpful, and not competitive and cruel.鈥 As one student notes, 鈥渢he school did a wonderful job of preparing me for practice, and they were invaluable in the job search process.鈥 In today鈥檚 tight job market, an engaged and active career center and alumni network is essential. As one student notes, many of her 鈥渃olleagues opened their own practices during the tough job market,鈥 and getting the first-hand, practical experience UT offers 鈥渁llows one to do that.鈥
