Two decades ago, Mercer University's School of Law鈥攚hich was founded in 1873鈥攔esolved that no graduate would enter the legal profession without a solid grounding in practical legal skills. Enrolling around 140 students each year, the Macon-based law school educates future lawyers using the Woodruff Curriculum, which highlights ethics, professionalism, and practical skills (such as interviewing and counseling, negotiation, mediation, and trial advocacy). In addition, Mercer also features a renowned Legal Writing Program (including the nation's only Certificate in Advanced Legal Writing, Research, and Drafting). With an 鈥渆mphasis on practice rather than theory,鈥 around half of all Mercer students take part in clinical training through the school's Experiential Education program, incorporating clinical courses, moot court and mock trial competitions, and opportunities such as the Habeas Project, which offers a legal lifeline (and potential new trial) to people who have been wrongfully imprisoned. As one student shares, 鈥淎t the start of my second year, I have already been sworn into the court and represented clients of my own.鈥 Additionally, third-year students can take part in the Semester in Atlanta program, which allows the benefits of being in close proximity to the state capital: access to more classes available at the school's Atlanta campus as well as further externships. The school has 鈥渟tayed up-to-date with current technology and implementing [it] in the classroom,鈥 ultimately cultivating 鈥渁 beautiful facility to work in.鈥 Another student sums up the offerings by saying, 鈥淲e have everything we need to be successful.鈥

The 鈥渇aculty is the friendliest,鈥 and is 鈥渟upremely helpful, always available, and provides 鈥 everything we need resource-wise to be successful.鈥 Furthermore, 鈥渢hey really care about the students鈥 and 鈥渢horoughly enjoy the subject, [which] comes through in their teaching style.鈥 Classes are filled with 鈥渢eaching practical aspects of law and giving practice pointers for students.鈥 This is possible because 鈥渕ost have 鈥 experience in [their] specific field and are very knowledgeable on the subject matter.鈥 The dean and professors both 鈥渟et great examples and help set the learning atmosphere to be cooperative and not cutthroat.鈥 Career Services also 鈥渄oes a good job of listening to our interests prior to urging us to apply for jobs.鈥 As one enrollee shares, 鈥淚 never felt 鈥榩ushed' into Big Law. I told them my goals and they told me of the opportunities available.鈥 Plus, the school has 鈥渟ome of the most helpful, caring and knowledgeable alumni,鈥 so 鈥渨herever you are looking to intern, 鈥 you can find a Mercer Law grad there.鈥

Campus Life

Students Say

The ambitious students at Mercer are 鈥渄eeply and widely involved,鈥 so 鈥渢here is no shortage of people who are presidents of organizations who are also participating in externships.鈥 That widespread involvement leads to a place where 鈥渆veryone smiles and greets each other鈥 and a community that is 鈥渧ery tight knit and has good open communication.鈥 One of the school's greatest strengths is 鈥渉ow everyone works together to succeed instead of sabotaging each other.鈥 The environment at Mercer 鈥渋s friendly, yet there is room for appropriate debate,鈥 and 鈥渟tudents treat each other with dignity and respect.鈥 That respect is even more admirable here as there 鈥渋s a good mix of students from a wide social strata.鈥 One student says, 鈥淭here is a strong sense of 鈥榳e are all in this together' on campus.鈥 As for the surrounding area, the school has a 鈥済reat reputation amongst the community鈥 and 鈥済ood connections throughout the state of Georgia.鈥 Surrounding Macon is 鈥済oing through a modern revival and restoration,鈥 so it has plenty of 鈥渕usic venues and bars鈥 for those looking to blow off some steam.
