The College of Law at Loyola University New Orleans has over 100 years of history in training practice-ready lawyers under the Jesuit tradition, which 鈥減laces an emphasis on public service.鈥 All students take part in one year of the school's Lawyering curriculum, learning legal core skills through a 鈥渂road array of class options鈥 within the collaborative surroundings of a small class setting. They then build upon those skills through experiential learning, in which they have 鈥渁 lot of opportunities to apply the learned tools,鈥 whether that's by working with actual clients as Student Practitioners via the school's Law Clinic, learning client interviews, investigating scenarios, making informal and formal discoveries, drafting and filing pleadings, and researching legal cases. Further opportunities are available through the Environmental Law & Policy Lab (in which the school serves as an advocate for the Gulf), the Entrepreneurship Project (in which students assist local start-ups with legal needs), and the Human Rights Advocacy Project (where students help non-profits with research, write legal memoranda, and act as advocates). The 鈥渁mple opportunities for externships, including federal judicial externships,鈥 are also popular ways to earn credit (both academic and reputation-wise), with students going to more than 100 distinct placements with legal employers in recent years. Additionally, Loyola has 鈥渁 plethora of opportunities to work for pay, volunteer, research, and travel abroad,鈥 including programs in Austria, Greece, Panama, and China. Students are also a part of moot court, trial advocacy teams, and 20 active student organizations.
Loyola professors 鈥渁re unbelievably qualified and knowledgeable in their respective fields鈥 while remaining 鈥渄iverse in educational and practice backgrounds.鈥 One student shares, 鈥淲e have some serious big-wigs in their fields teaching us鈥 who 鈥渋ncorporate differing viewpoints in each class discussion.鈥 They 鈥渞eally do see students as future colleagues鈥 and 鈥渄o not mind if students pop in during office hours to ask questions about class material or to seek advice regarding a task given at their job, internship, or clinic.鈥 In fact, the entire school is said to have 鈥渟uch a nurturing environment.鈥 The courses 鈥渁re a mix of Socratic method, lecture, and student participation, and this unique curricula results in 鈥淐ivil Law students and Common Law students intermingling, [which] makes for an interesting dynamic where a lot of information can be shared throughout the classes.鈥 Moreover, the law library 鈥渋s very extensive鈥 and features librarians who are not only 鈥渟ome of the nicest people鈥 but are also 鈥渧ery insightful and always willing to help.鈥 In addition to career development and placement, a 鈥渞eally good bar prep program,鈥 upperclassmen mentorship, and counseling, there are also a 鈥渘umber of successful and proud Loyola alumni who never hesitate to give back to their alma mater and offer guidance.鈥 The administration 鈥渋nteracts with students regularly鈥 and 鈥渕akes sure that each remedy they offer is tailored to the specific student who sought the assistance.鈥

The campus has a 鈥済reat location in uptown New Orleans,鈥 which provides 鈥渁 very rich cultural experience: museums, zoos, and parks galore.鈥 These 鈥渁re wonderful [ways] to spend time and even [to] study in.鈥 But there is one thing students herald above all others: 鈥淭he food is amazing here. That alone is a wonderful experience.鈥 Plus, 鈥渆veryone is very social at Loyola,鈥 so there are plenty of dining partners. That might be because Loyola itself 鈥減ushes an atmosphere of inclusiveness.鈥 So, while 鈥渢here is always an on-campus event that caters to 鈥榩racticing' law,鈥 students here 鈥渁re not cutthroat when it comes to sharing resources or discussing various hypotheticals.鈥 As one attendee describes, 鈥淓veryone is competing to reach their own maximum level of success, not to prevent someone else from reaching theirs.鈥 Additionally, 鈥渢here's a constant sense of working together rather than working against one another.鈥 Overall, the school cultivates a communal atmosphere that takes pride in 鈥渇ostering intellectual conversations and ideas, both in and out of class.鈥
