Students enjoy a 鈥渇amilial environment at [the University of Oklahoma College of Law] that isn鈥檛 found elsewhere.鈥 A 鈥渁 competitive program鈥 in Norman, Oklahoma, OU Law is 鈥渁ffordable and practical鈥 and 鈥渨ithout the anxiety accompanied by many other similar programs.鈥 It boasts great regional prestige, an 鈥渆xpansive course selection covering a broad range of practice areas,鈥 as well as specialties like 鈥渢he oil and gas programs and offerings [which] are some of the best in the country.鈥 The facilities are 鈥渁bsolutely breathtaking,鈥 including 鈥渁 huge, beautiful courtroom that has been used by the Tenth Circuit to hold oral arguments.鈥 Students feel like they are part of a tightly knit community: 鈥淓ach and every student is competitive, but with themselves鈥攏ot each other鈥 and 鈥渢he deans know students by name, teach courses, and are active at almost all school activities, including competitions, guest speakers, awards luncheons.鈥
Students claim to 鈥渉ave never had a 鈥榖ad鈥 professor鈥 and universally praise 鈥渢he administration and support staff鈥 as 鈥減henomenal.鈥 Faculty and administrators are responsive to student needs and Dean Harroz 鈥渉as made amazing changes and improvements at OU Law in just his fourth year as dean.鈥 Students agree that through these improvements the 鈥渁dministration has responded to the changing job market with moderated adjustments instead of overreaction or denial.鈥 One such improvement is the school鈥檚 鈥淒igital Initiative, which began in the fall of 2014鈥 and 鈥済ave every student an iPad and access to several legal apps, as well as Microsoft Office.鈥 Students also enjoy 鈥渨eekly training sessions on different [legal] apps鈥 that help students understand how 鈥渢o integrate technology into our future practice鈥 and 鈥渢o better associate ourselves with [the] technology and apps we will likely use at firms.鈥
In the first year students take a core curriculum and 鈥1Ls are split into four, thirty to forty person sections for [these] required courses.鈥 They agree that these sections 鈥淸allow] for greater visibility with faculty and 鈥渢he benefit of the small section size can鈥檛 be overstated.鈥 After that students can pursue a specialization and 鈥渃ertifications in various niche practice areas.鈥 In addition to the world-class programs in natural resources, students are drawn to 鈥淥U鈥檚 amazing Native American Law program . . . and international human rights clinic.鈥 In addition, students say that the school has been developing other specialties: 鈥淥U鈥檚 environmental law area has gotten pretty strong鈥 and 鈥渢he administration is encouraging about new courses, and is constantly working to offer additional joint programs, certificates in specialized areas, and practical experience opportunities.鈥 Indeed, students say that externship and clerkship opportunities are one of the school鈥檚 greatest strengths, and 鈥渢he opportunities to gain practical experience, are some of the best in the country.鈥 While students say 鈥渢he Oklahoma Bar passage rate for OU students is high,鈥 they think the school 鈥淸needs] to provide more attention to out of state students that are trying to return to their home state.鈥 鈥淐areer services is good but not great,鈥 and students would like to see 鈥渕ore pairing with industry for internships and more pairing with firms for internships for those students not in the top 25 percent but who are fully capable of high quality work.鈥 But students also report getting summer internships through Career Services and the 鈥渁dministration brings in employers multiple times a week.鈥 Through the 鈥淟unch and [Learn]鈥 program students 鈥済et free food and listen to practicing attorneys as they discuss their field and potential internships.鈥

Campus Life

Students Say

Students 鈥渃ouldn鈥檛 ask for a better experience鈥 than the 鈥渃omfortable, relaxed pace that makes you feel at home and able to study or just hang out with friends between classes.鈥滶veryone enjoys 鈥淸studying] together鈥 and 鈥淸spending] time together outside of class.鈥 鈥淲e don鈥檛 have a toxic atmosphere that some other law schools have,鈥 one current student explained. Instead of emphasizing 鈥渃ut-throat鈥 competition, the administration encourages students to 鈥渇ocus on building one another up,鈥 and students say this collegial atmosphere 鈥渃ontributes greatly to the school鈥檚 and students鈥 successes.鈥 In the weeks before classes start, 鈥淥U kind of beats the competitiveness out of the students鈥 with 鈥渙lder mentors that speak with the sections鈥 and emphasize the 鈥渉ow important it is鈥 to cultivate 鈥渁 reputation as a good person on top of being a hard worker.鈥
While 鈥渢he LLM programs bring in students from all across the county and the world to our campus,鈥 students still feel that 鈥渙ne of the downfalls is the lack of much racial/religious diversity.鈥 But the friendly atmosphere and 鈥渟ocial life enables students to work hard at studying but also enjoy Norman鈥檚 famous Campus Corner.鈥 The OU Law campus is 鈥渃lose enough to main campus that it has the university vibe, but far enough away that we are sheltered from all those undergrads.鈥 Ample parking makes it 鈥渆asy to access,鈥 and 鈥済reat amenities and resources like twenty-four-hour printing and the Amicus Cafe鈥 keep students keep students productive. Administrators make it easy for students to organize study or group activities. 鈥淎ny organization or group of students can reserve any classroom, study room, conference room, or even court room with ease.鈥 Local distractions like the 鈥淣orman Music Festival, the Huge Renaissance Fair, and local music and art scenes in Oklahoma City and the surrounding areas ensure there is never a shortage of various study breaks.鈥
