The University of New Hampshire is the only law school in the state, yet it attracts a high class of students from all over the country, primarily due to its focus on creating 鈥減ractice-ready鈥� lawyers and because of its Intellectual Property Program, which 鈥渋s by far the greatest strength of this school.鈥� There are many resources available to students when it comes to IP: the library is the biggest IP library in the U.S., 鈥渕any graduates are willing to speak to us about their experience,鈥� and the program in Commerce and Technology includes a razor edge focus on e-Law.
The school has an 鈥渆xcellent focus on practice,鈥� which is buoyed by its externship programs and allows students to work in their fields of interest for up to a full semester while receiving credit. The Daniel Webster Scholar Honors Program 鈥渙ffers every real world experience a future attorney could ask for鈥� and is the only practice-based bar exam alternative in the nation. The emphasis on practical, skills-based lawyering 鈥渋s not just an advertisement鈥攊t really happens in the classroom.鈥� There are 鈥渆ndless鈥� internship, externship, and clinical opportunities, as well as a number of classes that focus on what you will do in practice, rather than just theory. 鈥淚f a student evades a tough question, the professor will often ask 鈥榃hat would you tell your client?鈥欌�� 鈥淚 really enjoy learning how we'll be able to apply what we learn in the real world,鈥� says a student.
Small class size means the 鈥渄ynamic, high energy鈥� faculty 鈥渞eally gets to know the students.鈥� Everybody at UNH Law is very accessible. 鈥淚 even see the Dean walking around in the hallways,鈥� says a 1L. 鈥淢any professors have an open door policy,鈥� and 鈥渢here are teaching assistants who can help you in the rare times when you can't find the professor.鈥� 鈥淭here was never a time when I needed to locate someone and I just couldn't,鈥� says a student. Some professors even give out their phone numbers 鈥渏ust in case,鈥� and students 鈥渄on't have to fight through twenty-three TAs before actually getting in touch with them.鈥� One contracts professor even stays until 11 p.m. at times when students need help preparing for finals. Several students take note and appreciate this apparent dedication. Almost all of the professors still practice or have practiced before they begin teaching, which allows them 鈥渁ctual practice-based knowledge to share with the students, [which is] a huge asset to the student body.鈥� Similarly, 鈥渢he administration and overall management of our school is great.鈥� 鈥淏ecause it's such a small school, you know all of the administrative staff, and they are very responsive to your needs,鈥� says a 2L.
As the main legal game in the state, the school attracts 鈥渁 wide variety of speakers from judges, governors, senators, to well known commentators in the legal field on a weekly basis,鈥� which makes for 鈥渆ndless opportunities for networking as a result.鈥� Some externs are sent to the New Hampshire Supreme Court, and students 鈥渁lso have the ability to extern at the first circuit and other federal courts;鈥� however, some feel like other concentrations of law besides IP 鈥渃ould use a little boost.鈥� 鈥淚f one was to practice something else and travel out of state they might not have much luck,鈥� says a student.

The school has 鈥渁 strong sense of community,鈥� and although it 鈥渉as limited facilities鈥� due to its size (鈥渢he building is very nice; not too big and not too small鈥�), the facilities the school does have 鈥渁re pristine, and run very smoothly,鈥� including a 鈥渂eautiful鈥� courtroom that is available for students to use whenever a class is not in session. The 鈥渃lose-knit鈥� Concord coterie means that plenty of campus life takes place off-campus. 鈥淚 frequently see professors and fellow students working out at the local YMCA,鈥� says a student. Concord 鈥渄oesn't have a great night life, but there are plenty of things to do here.鈥� The bars that are here 鈥渁re enough to keep you satisfied,鈥� and 鈥渢here are also a lot of great things to do around the city that don't involve drinking.鈥� Parking can sometimes be problematic, but 鈥渕ost students walk to school.鈥�
The 鈥渋ntimate environment鈥� fostered on campus is apparent everywhere. 鈥淧rofessors interact with the students outside of class on a daily basis and seem to generally care about how each student is doing.鈥� The student body itself is composed of 鈥渄iverse groups of students of all ages and from all backgrounds.鈥� Although the students are competitive, they 鈥渁ll get along well and work together, creating a strong network in the long term.鈥� Most of the students here are right out of undergrad or have spent one to two years outside of school before applying to law school.
