Of course, the best aspect of UM might just be the 鈥渋ncredibly knowledgeable鈥� and 鈥渋nvested鈥� professors. Students have the opportunity to 鈥渨ork closely with some of the greatest legal minds in Maine.鈥� And the 鈥渁ccess to faculty is unparalleled.鈥� Professors 鈥渢ake a huge interest in their students and provid[e] them with all the resources they could ever need.鈥� Even better, they know how to make their courses endlessly interesting. We鈥檒l let this impressed student explain. 鈥淚 came into school knowing that I wanted to focus in juvenile justice but I left 1L year with a newfound respect for a range of subjects that I never cared about before. I am fascinated by property law now and could even manage to care a little bit about contracts (which is wild).鈥�

Further, many professors 鈥減ractice locally and help students make connections outside of school.鈥� The university also does a great job of encouraging 鈥渞elationships between students and local attorneys.鈥� Additionally, 鈥渢he First Circuit and the District Court for the District of Maine partner with the law school to provide opportunities exclusively to students at Maine Law.鈥� And a number of people highlight the fact that the 鈥渧ast majority of the Maine State Bar is comprised of Maine Law grads.鈥� In other words, 鈥淚f you鈥檙e interested in practicing law in Maine, Maine Law is pretty much the ONLY school worth attending.鈥�

Maine Law does an excellent job at fostering a 鈥渟trong sense of community.鈥� There鈥檚 certainly a 鈥渃ooperative spirit among students鈥� and they happily 鈥渟upport one another.鈥� In fact, 鈥渄uring reading week leading up to finals, you鈥檒l routinely see students working together and answering each other鈥檚 questions.鈥� They do acknowledge, however, that ethnic diversity is lacking. As this student plainly states, 鈥淚f you鈥檙e looking for diversity based on skin color, please note that Maine is the 鈥榳hitest state in the union.鈥欌�� Fortunately, 鈥渢he school is very diverse with regards to age, background, political viewpoint, sexual preferences, etc.鈥� Though a handful of people argue that the law school 鈥渋s overwhelmingly liberal, and if you are conservative, you feel uncomfortable expressing any of your views.鈥�

One point virtually all students agree on? The fact that Portland is a 鈥渂eautiful city on the ocean.鈥� Of course, if you come from a larger metropolitan area, it can feel like a 鈥渟mall town.鈥� The upside is that 鈥測ou always know where your friends and classmates are on the weekends.鈥� Plus, Portland has a 鈥渘ationally recognized foodie scene鈥� and 鈥渓ots of craft cocktail bars.鈥� All in all, the city is 鈥渁 great place to spend three years.鈥�
