There is a 鈥減rofessional, collaborative environment鈥 at Hofstra Law, where the school鈥檚 students are huge fans of the 鈥渙utstanding鈥 administration, who, in many cases, 鈥渁re willing to bend over backwards to accommodate you.鈥 鈥淭he administration is great because they are very accessible and interested in our success as lawyers and as students,鈥 says a 1L. The Career Center here is similarly involved, 鈥渘ot only [in] our futures, but also in helping alumni find new jobs.鈥 Right from the first week of class, Hofstra Law is big on helping students to network with attorneys and alumni and putting a realistic perspective on the possibilities out there (Note: The school does rank students within classes.), though a few students do lament the school鈥檚 rather intense focus on work in the public sector. An expanded internship and externship program began in 2013 offering semester long experience in Washington D.C..鈥淚鈥檝e had the opportunity to learn about how much work and how many different areas of law you can practice鈥ow I actually know what I can do with a JD,鈥 says a first-year law student. Though not every single person leaves a satisfied customer, the school certainly shows a 鈥渄esire to improve,鈥 and all who go here pretty much generally agree, 鈥淚f you are proactive and work hard, Hofstra will work hard for you as well.鈥
Its location close to New York City helps the school to attract 鈥渟ome legendary professors at the top of their fields,鈥 most of whom are 鈥渞eadily available outside of class, and鈥eem to genuinely care about the students鈥 success.鈥 鈥淣ot a single one stands on ceremony,鈥 says a student. Most 鈥渄o not implement harsh variations of the Socratic Method鈥; they have 鈥渞eal-world experience that they bring to their lectures鈥 and use 鈥減ractical methods that help students to try [to] learn, rather than simply memorize the material.鈥 Hofstra Law鈥檚 focus on practical and legal writing skills 鈥渘ever ceases to pay off during internships/clerkships.鈥 鈥淚 thought that Hofstra would not offer the same kind of academic experience as those in the top schools. I was very pleasantly surprised,鈥 says a student. 鈥淭hey are constantly trying to鈥elp develop the students into lawyers.鈥
Some bigger picture gripes include that tuition is not easy on the wallet. 鈥淟ower tuition please. I don鈥檛 have a money tree in my backyard,鈥 begs a 1L. Classrooms 鈥渁re adequate for the purpose they serve鈥; though the technology is up-to-date (lectures are webcast, Wi-Fi is readily available), the facilities as a whole could use a face-lift. Also, as one weary student puts it, 鈥淣ot to beat a dead horse, but parking is always an issue.鈥

Campus Life

Students Say

First-year students have all their classes with the same section, so 鈥渢here is a sense that we are all getting through together.鈥 This instantly creates a nice community for incoming students, who also appreciate their access to 2Ls and 3Ls that 鈥渁re more than happy to help with information about classes and professors.鈥 ""There is some small amount of competition, but that is what keeps us on our toes. It shouldn鈥檛 be frowned upon,鈥 says a student. Students are encouraged to work in study groups (and the overwhelming majority do), and 鈥渢here is a strong desire to help others understand鈥; students 鈥済et lots of support from...fellow law school brothers and sisters.鈥 鈥淲e actually like one another!鈥 says a 1L.
While the school鈥檚 location on the edge of the somewhat tucked-away neighborhood of Hempstead is far from ideal, 鈥渟ecurity on campus is very efficient.鈥 Long Island is 鈥渁 little boring,鈥 but 鈥渢here is ample opportunity for social activities,鈥 as the law school itself has many different student organizations, 鈥渟o it鈥檚 easy to find a group of people you can relate to and who have interest[s] in common with you.鈥 Commuting to and from New York City, for school or for fun, is also an option. The school offers a free shuttle to the local train station and its a thirty-five minute ride on the train. Law students here do tend to be a bit 鈥渟tressed out,鈥 but the school as a whole still remains a 鈥渧ery friendly environment that the students really enjoy.鈥 It is a 鈥渓aid-back atmosphere, [where students are] serious about work but not competitive.鈥
