Students Say

Tulane University Law School is 鈥渆xtremely enjoyable because it provides you with the same resources as all the top law schools, with a more laid-back atmosphere.鈥 鈥淭he quality of teaching is superb.鈥 The 鈥渨orld-renowned faculty鈥 here is full of 鈥渆xperts and kick-ass attorneys鈥 who are 鈥渇unny, extremely smart, and extremely approachable.鈥 鈥淭hey are highly qualified and accomplished but remain accessible and down-to-earth.鈥 Some students call the administration 鈥渞idiculously awesome,鈥 too. The deans are 鈥渘ice and helpful,鈥 they say, 鈥渁nd most of them teach a 1L or 2L class, which gives you the opportunity to be exposed to them early on in your career.鈥 More critical students call the management merely 鈥渧aguely competent.鈥

Tulane is home to 鈥渜uite a few unique programs and strengths.鈥 In addition to 鈥渆xceptional clinical opportunities鈥 and a host of dual-degree programs, students edit no fewer than eight journals. Tulane also offers certificates in international and comparative law, admiralty law, environmental law, sports law, and civil law. Also, Louisiana is a civil law state (whereas every other state is a common law state), so students are exposed to two very different legal systems. 鈥淭he ability to follow a common law or civil law track not only opens up opportunities in Louisiana, but it also makes an international law career more feasible.鈥 The big academic complaint here is the research and writing program. 鈥淚 am not sure whoever designed it has ever heard the term 鈥榖est practices,鈥欌 speculates a 1L. 鈥淚f you came as a strong technical writer, you will leave with no new skills. If you did not, you are on your own.鈥

Students note that the academic program is competitive and challenging, and it is important to maintain strong performance if you want to gain the interest of local employers. Tulane is 鈥渆xtremely active in helping everyone secure summer employment and beyond.鈥 Students also note that their school鈥檚 brand name is often a real advantage on a r茅sum茅. 鈥淲e鈥檙e the best law school in Louisiana, and the firms know it,鈥 brags a 2L. 鈥淲e are not all competing for the same thirty spots at the top law firm in our city because our goals are incredibly diverse,鈥 adds a 2L.

Facilities wise, Tulane has 鈥渁 wonderful library.鈥 Some students say that 鈥渃lassrooms are nice.鈥 Others disagree. 鈥淭he actual building and classrooms are forgettable,鈥 they tell us. 鈥淭he horrid ergonomics of it all!鈥 bemoans a 2L. 鈥淭o plug in your laptop can take two minutes and can set the stage for an awkward encounter with the person sitting next to you while you fumble around under the table like a teenager on a first date.鈥

Campus Life

Students Say

New Orleans is located in 鈥渢he American South, and many students come from the South.鈥 Geographic diversity is pretty abundant, though. Some 85 percent of the students come from a state other than Louisiana. About 20 percent of the students represent an ethnic minority. There鈥檚 a 鈥渨ide range of International Students鈥 and plenty of 鈥渄iversity of opinion and background.鈥 Some students insist that 鈥渢here鈥檚 no cutthroat competition here.鈥 They say that the typical student is as 鈥渇riendly, cooperative, and as laid-back as a stressed law student could possibly be.鈥 Others tell us that competition exists 鈥渂ut it鈥檚 not as prevalent until exam time.鈥

Outside of class, Tulane students are an 鈥渆xtremely social,鈥 鈥渇un-loving bunch.鈥 There are 鈥減lenty of cliques, largely organized according to special interests areas of law, ethnicity, and age.鈥 At the same time, the environment is 鈥渧ery collegial.鈥 鈥淭he community atmosphere is a definite plus.鈥 Quite a few students 鈥渆njoy a good party.鈥 There are 鈥渁 lot of the smart kids who had fun in undergrad鈥 here, and their good times continue unabated in law school. 鈥淪ocializing is in overdrive at TLS,鈥 cautions a 2L, 鈥渨hich can be a distraction from your studies if you let it.鈥 鈥淢ost people go out at least once or twice a week.鈥 鈥淲hether it鈥檚 a run-of-the-mill bar review or renting out a restaurant on the Mardi Gras parade route, there鈥檚 always a social event on the horizon.鈥

Off campus, the Big Easy is reportedly 鈥渢he most relaxed city in the U.S.鈥 and 鈥渁 perfect place to unwind on weekends or after finals.鈥 Students love the food, the nightlife, and the 鈥渨arm winter weather.鈥 There鈥檚 the debauchery of Bourbon Street, of course, but there鈥檚 also an array of 鈥渋ncredible鈥 streets and neighborhoods. 鈥淭he sidewalk bistros and beautiful, lush scenery add significant character to your day-to-day experience as a law student.鈥 Beyond the city of New Orleans, 鈥渢here are lots of good places for weekend trips in the area鈥 as well.
