Students Say

It鈥檚 a simple fact: Capital University Law School is 鈥渁n underrated gem.鈥 Boasting 鈥渙ne of the highest Bar passage rates in Ohio,鈥 a 鈥済ood practical skills program,鈥 鈥渟mall classes鈥 and 鈥渁bundant鈥 resources, it鈥檚 easy to understand how the program attracts so many future JDs. Students greatly benefit from 鈥渁 strong mandatory legal research and writing program, including a mandatory drafting class for 3Ls.鈥 Moreover, beyond the general clinic program, students can take advantage of a fabulous 鈥淔oster Youth Advocacy Clinic.鈥 Additionally, those prospective students hoping/needing to work while attending law school will be delighted to discover that Capital 鈥渙ffers [that] rare alternative in legal education, a high-quality part-time evening program.鈥 Students really appreciate the 鈥渙pportunity to take courses with people who have work experience gives a unique diversity to course discussions.鈥
Impressively, Capital鈥檚 faculty is comprised of 鈥渟cholars who are nationally known in the areas of family, children鈥檚, environmental, and regulatory law.鈥 Further, a number of professors have 鈥淸practical] experience in litigation, negotiation, and public service.鈥 Accessibility is another common attribute of Capital鈥檚 faculty and, typically, they are 鈥渕ore than willing to meet with students out of class when necessary.鈥 Students here also find that their professors are 鈥渕otivated and engaged in the material.鈥 Their 鈥渓ove for teaching is infectious鈥 and they continually find ways to be 鈥渃reative鈥 in the classroom. And, as one sage third-year explains, 鈥渢he dedicated professors make all the difference.鈥
Students certainly have a difference of opinion when it comes to Capital鈥檚 administration. As one third-year laments, 鈥淭he registar鈥檚 office needs a lot of help.鈥 He further elaborates, 鈥淸A]lmost every semester I attended Capital, it cancelled classes after I registered. During my fall semester of last year four out of five of the classes I wanted to take got cancelled. This semester, a class got cancelled abruptly, with over eighty students registered, because of 鈥榰nforeseen changes in the professor鈥檚 personal life.鈥欌 However, a second-year argues that the 鈥渁dministration is generally quick to address problems,鈥 and a first-year asserts that they 鈥渕ake great efforts to accommodate the needs of [their] students.鈥

Campus Life

Students Say

Capital is able to foster a 鈥渟trong student community.鈥 This can largely be attributed to the fact that it鈥檚 鈥渘ot overly competitive, and the students at the school are all friends.鈥 As a knowing third-year tells us, 鈥淲e share notes, study suggestions, even outlines. I鈥檝e NEVER seen any underhanded or mean competitive actions.鈥 While there tends to be a divide between full-time first-years and part-time students, another third-year informs us that 鈥渁s soon as you hit 2L year (even as a full-time day student) you almost always have to take a night course or two.鈥 He continues, 鈥淚 can鈥檛 underscore how valuable this is to class discourse, diversity or students, and networking. CULS also has a number of veterans in the night program, which brings the conversation to a whole different level.鈥
Outside the classroom, students benefit from CULS鈥檚 prime Columbus location. Indeed, the program鈥檚 great reputation and proximity to the capital virtually guarantees 鈥渁mazing externship opportunities.鈥 A third-year explains, 鈥淰arieties of positions are available at the Supreme Court of Ohio, the Legislature, Executive branch, numerous agencies, or lobbying organizations.鈥 And, given the 鈥渃urrent evolving legal market, public service work continues to be one of the more stable practice areas. [Attending] CULS provides outstanding preparation and networking opportunities.鈥 Beyond the legal world, students can take advantage of all the great entertainment options Columbus offers鈥攆rom the zoo and aquarium to NHL hockey, the symphony, opera, and numerous restaurants and cafes.
