Students at Cleveland State University鈥檚 Cleveland-Marshall College of Law call their school 鈥渁 diamond in the rough.鈥� The focus here is squarely on bar preparation and practical training. 鈥淭he greatest strengths are the opportunities for real-world experience,鈥� says a 3L. There are a half dozen clinics and they cover a wide range of legal areas. 鈥淥n average, Marshall professors are knowledgeable, passionate, and approachable,鈥� relates a 2L. 鈥淚 have never been taught something as inherently boring as civil procedure in such an invigorating manner,鈥� beams a 1L. Professors are also generally accessible outside the classroom. The 鈥渆xcellent鈥� administration is 鈥渆xtremely open to student interaction and answers questions and concerns promptly.鈥� However, 鈥渉eading to the main campus to get administrative stuff done can be tedious.鈥� Students鈥� biggest academic complaint involves the distribution of grades. The curve here, which permits faculty members to give over 50 percent of all 1Ls a grade of C+ or lower, can be pretty rough.
Cleveland-Marshall Law is located in downtown Cleveland on the main campus of the larger university, which means that part-time work at local firms is easy to come by throughout the year. According to some students, 鈥渢he facilities could be a little fancier.鈥� Most say that the layout of the law school is 鈥渘ot only aesthetically pleasing but functional,鈥� though. 鈥淭he library is great.鈥� 鈥淭he new addition is modern and beautiful,鈥� relates a 1L. 鈥淚t鈥檚 eye-catching from the street and a great place for students to study or relax between classes.鈥�
More than 75 percent of all newly minted graduates take jobs in either private practice or the corporate world. The overwhelming majority of Cleveland-Marshall鈥檚 alumni practice in Ohio and the school鈥檚 reputation is very solid throughout the northeastern part of the state. Students rave about Cleveland-Marshall Law鈥檚 鈥渃onnection to the Cleveland legal community鈥� as well as 鈥渁 supportive, active alumni base that extends opportunities to anyone who seeks them.鈥�

The part-time program at Cleveland-Marshall is pretty large and 鈥渆vening and day students do have very different experiences.鈥� As you would expect, full-timers are generally younger while part-timers are older and have 鈥渕ore time in the real world鈥� already under their belts. 鈥淚n my class, we have architects, engineers, law enforcement officials, researchers, bankers, and people with other varying careers,鈥� says a part-time 2L. Some part-time students complain that they are 鈥渆xcluded from a lot of school activities and classes.鈥� Others assert that 鈥渢he full- and part-timers are treated equally.鈥� 鈥淚 am a full-time 3L who frequently takes night classes due to my part-time work schedule and I haven鈥檛 noticed a divide between night and day professors鈥� focus on the students,鈥� explains one student. 鈥淪ome of the best professors I have had in law school teach night classes.鈥�
Student opinion concerning the academic atmosphere is mixed. Some students flatly call it 鈥渃ompetitive.鈥� Others, staking something of a middle ground, say that 鈥減eople are friendly and willing to help, most of the time.鈥� Still others describe 鈥渁 great sense of camaraderie.鈥� 鈥淪tudents here help one another better than at any institution I鈥檝e ever encountered,鈥� declares a 3L. Socially, clubs and extracurricular activities are abundant. 鈥淭he student bar association plans fun socials at least once a month with free food and drinks for students to unwind.鈥� 鈥淓veryone seems to fall into whatever groups make them happy and things move right along.鈥� 鈥淢ost of the students know one another,鈥� explains a 3L. 鈥淲e have lockers, prom (Barrister鈥檚 Ball), socials, drama, and tons of drinking.鈥� Beyond the law school orbit, Cleveland isn鈥檛 generally listed among the greatest cities in the United States but there really are a lot of charming neighborhoods and the cost of living is comparatively low.
