Students Say

The University of Toledo College of Law offers an affordable and welcoming, yet structured atmosphere designed to 鈥渁ccommodate, relax, and train students.鈥 The school has climbed in stature last year, yet retains its rather 鈥渉umble, calm nature,鈥 partially due to its 鈥渋ntelligent, caring, involved, and self-regulating鈥 students and decidedly non-arrogant professors who 鈥渁re truly incredible individuals.鈥 鈥淓very aspect of the school strikes the perfect balance between professionalism and personal attention,鈥 says a 2L. Students speak overwhelmingly of the school鈥檚 obvious care and concern for their future, and the faculty鈥檚 鈥渨illingness to sit and chat with students about class at any time, while connecting what we learn to real-life use.鈥 Thanks to the smaller number of students, 鈥渆veryone is able to develop personal relationships with faculty and staff.鈥 In an effort to keep anxiety levels down, a lot of the professors stay away from the old version of the Socratic Method, which too often 鈥減uts you on edge.鈥 If you do want to discuss flagging grades or class issues, all professors 鈥済o out of their way to make themselves available to students.鈥 鈥淚t is not uncommon for professors to 鈥榟ang out鈥 in the forum chatting with students,鈥 says one. 鈥淚 feel I can approach them with everything: my fears, thoughts, and course questions,鈥 says another. The 鈥渞elatively new鈥 administration 鈥渢akes a personal and vested interest in seeing us succeed,鈥 and 鈥渆verything and everyone is very easily and readily accessible.鈥 Students do wish for a 鈥渕ore formalized joint degree program鈥 and a 鈥渂roader variety of courses,鈥 as well as a less rigid attendance policy.
The research and writing program is 鈥渧ery thorough and puts an emphasis on real-world concerns,鈥 and the school furthers each student鈥檚 practical background through almost-weekly opportunities to attend speeches or lectures, like one given by U.S. Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia. Law Career Services 鈥渉as put a great deal of effort鈥 into the school鈥檚 Public Service Externship programs to ensure that students have the opportunity to network while still in school. There鈥檚 a 鈥渧ery big involvement of [the] Toledo Bar Association and Federal Bar Association in the school鈥檚 life.鈥 The office 鈥淸does] it鈥檚 best to help us in this tough economy,鈥 although the employment rate after graduation leaves something to be desired. However, students complain that much of this is due to the 鈥渙versaturated鈥 Toledo and Midwest market, and the school鈥檚 lack of national name recognition means that more help is needed in other regions.
Aside from the somewhat archaic building and library, which are 鈥渕ore appropriate to an era of bellbottoms and platform shoes,鈥 the law school鈥檚 facilities are up-to-date (though definitely 鈥渘ot glamorous鈥), with wireless Internet access available in 鈥渆very corner of the building鈥 and Smart Boards in every classroom.

Campus Life

Students Say

Racial diversity isn鈥檛 exactly at United Colors of Benetton levels here, but it 鈥渋s quite good for this area of the country,鈥 and the faculty is very sensitive to both racial and gender issues. The political views also 鈥渇ollow a Midwestern range,鈥 ranging from liberal to conservative. The student body remains uncompetitive and 鈥済ets along great,鈥 even though many students (especially 1Ls) have GPA-based scholarships, and there鈥檚 a great camaraderie among classes. The student mentor program receives raves, and to further this sense of interconnectedness, intramural sports are big. 鈥淭here are many organizations to get involved with,鈥 and the Student Bar Association does 鈥渁 very good job at bringing students together through social events (including weekly bar reviews) and volunteer opportunities.鈥
鈥淭oledo isn鈥檛 exactly a party town,鈥 and it鈥檚 鈥渘ot the most enjoyable place to be,鈥 so there aren鈥檛 too many distractions from school, but for those looking to blow off steam, 鈥淭here are amazing metro parks, art, music, a zoo, and baseball and hockey games to attend.鈥 As one might expect of a small school in a small city, 鈥渢he sense of community that Toledo strives for is amazing and then stems into the larger Toledo legal community.鈥 UT Law is also located within an hour of Detroit and Sandusky, within two hours of Dayton and Cleveland, and within four hours of Chicago, Indianapolis, Columbus, and Cincinnati. Still, when students are on campus, 鈥渋t鈥檚 difficult to get any kind of food after 11:00 p.m.,鈥 and the law school doesn鈥檛 have any food options that can accommodate for the late hours students normally spend here.
