The faculty as a whole is 鈥渆xcellent鈥 and 鈥渆ngaging.鈥 They 鈥渄o their best to make sure the material is as interesting as possible鈥 and 鈥渢ake a very practical tack in their approach to teaching.鈥 鈥淭he atmosphere at McKinney is such that, while the work is intense, I鈥檝e never felt like not wanting to go to class,鈥 beams a 2L. 鈥淓ver.鈥 Outside of class, 鈥淧rofessors are accessible and students are not afraid to approach them for help on a concept or to share a joke.鈥 The two-semester legal writing program (with optional third semester) generally receives high marks. Student opinion concerning the administration is mixed. Defenders of it tell us that the top brass is student-friendly and 鈥渄oes a fairly good job.鈥 鈥淭he administration always tries its best to help us succeed,鈥 says a happy 2L. Detractors complain that 鈥渢he administration has no idea what鈥檚 going on.鈥 One complaint is that registration can be difficult for 2Ls and 3Ls. 鈥淭oo many classes clumped at the same time make it difficult鈥 to take all the courses you want (or need). A few professors are 鈥渘ot interested in teaching at all.鈥
McKinney is the lesser known of the two IU law schools (the other one is in Bloomington), but students say that attending the only law school in Indiana鈥檚 state capital and commercial hub definitely has its perks. The school is close to 鈥渁ll of the large firms鈥 in the city and 鈥渨ithin blocks of city, state, and federal government offices, and courthouses.鈥 鈥淭his enables us to work at some of the state鈥檚 best and largest firms throughout the school year,鈥 explains a 3L. 鈥淚t also provides us with the opportunity to do externships with all of the state鈥檚 major courts and organizations.鈥 鈥淏eing in downtown Indianapolis is excellent for networking opportunities with the legal community,鈥 too. Some students applaud the efforts of the 鈥渉ardworking鈥 staff in the Office of Professional Development to secure career opportunities. Other students are less than thrilled. 鈥淭hey don鈥檛 help anyone get jobs,鈥 gripes a 3L, 鈥渁nd they don鈥檛 respond to phone calls or e-mails, either.鈥 Also, while the school鈥檚 reputation in the state is very good, 鈥渋t鈥檚 an uphill battle to find employment outside of Indiana.鈥

Students Say
McKinney is located on the campus of Indiana University鈥擯urdue University Indianapolis (where 鈥減arking is absolutely atrocious鈥). 鈥淭he school鈥檚 central location is used to its fullest advantage through symposiums, networking functions, alumni activities, and other gatherings where members of the Indianapolis legal community mingle with students,鈥 relates a 2L. Life beyond academics gets mixed reviews. By all accounts, Indianapolis is 鈥渁 great city鈥 with lots to see and do. Some students tell us that the school provides many social outlets. 鈥淭here are a lot of activities,鈥 and you can 鈥渞elive high school all over again鈥 鈥渨ith more drinking.鈥 Others give the campus 鈥渁 mediocre rating for social life.鈥 鈥淭he problem is that it鈥檚 a commuter school and people are coming from all over the place.鈥 鈥淧eople do their work and go home.鈥 鈥淎s a result, there is not a whole lot of socializing.鈥
