Washington and Lee may be 鈥渟mall in size, but [it] has the resources of a large tier-one law school.鈥� W&L small size means 鈥渢iny class sizes鈥� with great 鈥渇aculty to student ratio[s].鈥� It also fosters a friendly atmosphere where everyone 鈥済enuinely care[s] about you and your success.鈥� Other benefits include a 鈥渟trong alumni presence,鈥� 鈥渃hallenging, but fulfilling鈥� academics, and 鈥渢he slow atmosphere of Lexington, VA鈥� that 鈥渓eaves fewer distractions from school.鈥� By far the most raved about aspect of W&L鈥檚 School of Law is that it has the 鈥渂est 3L program in the country鈥� that 鈥渉as revolutionized legal teaching.鈥� The third year program 鈥渇ocuses heavily on practice preparation and client interaction鈥� and students are 鈥減ut through an 鈥榠mmersion鈥� course at the beginning of each semester, which is an intense practice-based scenario in litigation (fall semester) and transaction work (spring semester).鈥� This is a great improvement 鈥渙ver the traditional law school curriculum where 3L is basically just a year of spending money and killing time.鈥�
鈥淭he facilities themselves are good, especially for such a small school,鈥� and 鈥渃lassrooms are equipped with up-to-date technology.鈥� While it's not in the most attractive or state of the art building鈥he campus as a whole is quite beautiful and homey,鈥� one student observes. Another says 鈥淪ydney Lewis Hall is a 1970s monstrosity,鈥� but 鈥渢he administration is making a concerted effort to renovate the building.鈥� One benefit of Washington and Lee鈥檚 facilities is that every student has 鈥渢heir own study carrel鈥� in the 鈥渁mazing鈥� library. Like the building itself, these carrels may be 鈥渁 bit old (and cold),鈥� but are still a luxury that not every law school affords. As a 1L explains, 鈥淟aw school is not a walk in the park but W&L makes it as nice as it can be, in a lot of ways.鈥�
Students give high ratings to the staff, saying 鈥渆veryone from the cafeteria employees to the dean of the school is phenomenal.鈥� 鈥淭he administration is extremely caring and helpful,鈥� but 鈥渢he faculty are head and shoulders above the administration.鈥� Students say the biggest strength of the school is the 鈥渢eachers, teachers, and teachers.鈥� The 鈥渂rilliant鈥� professors at W&L are 鈥渆xtremely accessible鈥� with a 鈥渟trict open-door policy that gives the entire school a community feel.鈥� There could be more 鈥渄iversity among professors鈥� though, and the administration 鈥淸sells] more parking passes than there are parking spots.鈥� On the downside, 鈥淭he Office of Career Planning is widely regarded as an unhelpful place.鈥� Professors use 鈥渢he Socratic method, and classes have always been an environment of tolerance.鈥� 鈥淚f you want to stay anywhere near sane during law school, this is the place to go,鈥� a 1L concludes.

Washington and Lee鈥檚 School of Law has something of a party reputation, and 鈥渓aw school sports and cocktail parties are frequent.鈥� The school itself actually 鈥渇und[s] weekend parties throughout the month of February that we host at our homes (but don't pay for alcohol or cleanup the next day.)鈥� Because of the school鈥檚 small size, 鈥渢he students all get to know each other very well, and the professors/administrators also get to know each of us on an individual basis.鈥� The student body is not very diverse, but 鈥渢he administration is consciously making an effort to bring in students from all backgrounds.鈥� The city of Lexington is 鈥渁 very slow moving place with not a lot to do other than study,鈥� although 鈥渋t's close enough to Roanoke and Richmond鈥� if students desire something only a 鈥渞eal city鈥� can provide. 鈥淭he Indian food in Roanoke (less than an hour away) is great,鈥� one student reports. The area is 鈥渧ery rural,鈥� but some students like the 鈥渘atural鈥� surroundings which allow for 鈥渢ubing down the Maury River, hiking House Mountain,鈥� and many other outdoor activities.
