The University of Pittsburgh School of Law鈥檚 long history of turning out educated, practical attorneys dates back more than 110 years, and the school (located in the lively Oakland neighborhood of Pittsburgh) continues to uphold the standards of excellence set into place way back when. Those who want to focus or broaden their expertise can enroll in one of seven joint degree programs (including two partnerships with Carnegie Mellon University) or five certificate programs, which come with possibilities for international externships, skills instruction by teams of practicing litigators, or membership on an intellectual property moot court team.
Pitt Law often flies under the radar, but boasts 鈥渁 surprisingly impressive faculty and staff鈥 and an 鈥渋ncredible and very accessible鈥 dean. 鈥淚 often joke that I accidentally went to the best school I applied to without knowing it,鈥 says a 1L. The 鈥渆xtremely high quality鈥 professors are 鈥渇antastic,鈥 鈥渦niversally reasonable, engaged, and knowledgeable,鈥 and are 鈥渁ccessible without any reservation.鈥 Some 鈥渨ill even give personal phone numbers to contact in case of emergency or to arrange a meeting outside the law school.鈥 鈥淚've been impressed at how passionate a lot of the professors are about their subjects. If you go talk to them, you may pick up a bit of that passion, too,鈥 says another.
The 鈥渂readth of available academic concentrations and hands-on skills courses鈥 afforded to students are what really drive home the value of a Pitt Law degree; the health law and international law programs are 鈥渙f a very high caliber鈥 and offer 鈥渄iverse opportunities and successful job placement,鈥 and Pitt Law students can also serve as editors at JURIST, the world's only web-based, student-powered legal news source, which is based at the law school. Students can also take advantage of 鈥渢he help and resources of Pitt Law's internal organizations鈥 such as the Center for International Legal Education, which helps to organize international internships and other opportunities, and the Innovation Practice Institute, which connects law students with local start-ups.
The financial aid and admissions offices 鈥渁re run more smoothly than any other school of which I know,鈥 according to a student. Career services 鈥渉as often seemed meandering in focus,鈥 but 鈥渢he new head of the career services office is more aggressive in pursuing opportunities for students.鈥 She is 鈥渋ncredibly well networked and goes above and beyond to assist students in finding and landing internships and jobs.鈥 The alumni network is also quite expansive, and most former students 鈥渟eem to hold a special place in their hearts for their alma mater and a strong willingness to help current students achieve their goals.鈥

Campus Life

Students Say

Pittsburgh 鈥渋s pretty much the perfect city for law school鈥 (鈥渢he city as a whole is united around the sports teams鈥), and the school鈥檚 location is in a neighborhood known for being the city鈥檚 bustling academic and cultural center. Regrettably, the law school building is 鈥渁 1970s concrete monstrosity鈥 (鈥淭he architecture of this place kills me every time,鈥 says a student); the facilities inside are 鈥渨ell-equipped [and] sufficient for learning,鈥 but 鈥測ou will never have a classroom lit with natural light.鈥 Pitt Law is in the middle of a remodeling project to address these aesthetic issues. The library is 鈥渙utstanding,鈥 though. The school goes out of its way to 鈥渆nsure that we have access to a wide breath of electronic resources.鈥 Also, 鈥減rofessional research librarians are always on duty to help whenever the library is open.鈥
One of the greatest boons to Pitt Law life is the 鈥渟trength of the community,鈥 in which one鈥檚 peers 鈥渃an routinely be described as collaborative.鈥 鈥淭he goal is to learn the material, not to beat each other,鈥 says a 2L. This 鈥渉ard-working yet friendly student body鈥 creates 鈥渁 community atmosphere where classmates drive each other to succeed.鈥 Everyone 鈥渃heers each other on and shares in motivating each student to achieve everything they wish to pursue.鈥
