A small, Catholic-affiliated private school with a strong reputation in Ohio, the University of Dayton School of Law offers two JD options: a traditional three-year program and an accelerated two-year degree. No matter which course of study one chooses, the curriculum begins with ten core courses, followed by elective classes and upper-level seminars. When evaluating their academic experience, students dole out praises for the 鈥渋ncredible writing program,鈥 often citing the writing course work as the school鈥檚 greatest strength. They also love the fact that 鈥渃lasses are small,鈥 so students feel like 鈥渕ore than just a number to your professors鈥; although, they would love to see a 鈥渨ider range of courses鈥 offered to upper-level students.
Those who choose this 鈥渟erious鈥 school should come prepared to work hard. At this fast-paced program, students insist, 鈥淲e study just as hard as any first year law student possibly could鈥攖he bar is set high, and those who do not meet it after their first semester are asked not to return.鈥 The good news is that 鈥減rofessors are extremely accessible鈥 and 鈥済enuinely concerned with the success of their students,鈥 often 鈥渕ore than willing to meet with students outside of office hours and [to] make previous exams available.鈥 A 1L shares this rather reassuring advice, 鈥淚f you do not study (the workload is considerable) you will fail, but if a person wants to be here, they just need to put in the work and they will be fine.鈥
While UDSL recruits accomplished faculty, 鈥渢he professors vary as far as quality鈥 in the classroom. The majority of students maintain that 鈥渢he professors are, for the most part, wonderful. They are all very knowledgeable and are willing to provide as much outside assistance as necessary.鈥 Many will even 鈥渋ncorporate trending interests such as pop, music, movies into their teaching materials.鈥 Unfortunately, a few UDSL professors love the sound of their own voice, making it 鈥渧ery difficult to learn and share opinions in class.鈥 Still, a few bad classes amount to 鈥渁 small and limited experience鈥 when measured up against the program as a whole. Students dispute the administration鈥檚 effectiveness in managing the program, though they agree that the school鈥檚 deans and officers are 鈥渜uick to respond to student concerns and are very personable.鈥 Here, 鈥渂oth the Dean of Students and the Dean of the Law School know most of the students by name.鈥
Throughout the program, there is a 鈥渟trong emphasis on real world preparation and bar passage.鈥 Traditional academics are complemented by courses in writing and research, clinical experience, and a capstone course, in which students must apply their skills to a real-world situation. Through the school鈥檚 clinical programs, students also get experience 鈥減reparing all aspects of a case, from the initial client interview to preparing for trial and possibly even participating in a trial鈥; plus, 鈥渆very student is required to take an externship [or clinic] somewhere in a legal office so that we get hands-on legal training.鈥 When it comes to hiring, students say the school has a 鈥渕ostly regional appeal,鈥 with most students seeking employment in surrounding Dayton. A big benefit in the job market is that 鈥渢he alumni are very involved,鈥 and the 鈥渟chool鈥檚 alumni base stretches past the Midwest,鈥 reaching as far as western New York and other states.

In contrast to the rigors of the academic program, one student asserts, 鈥淭here is a pervasive, pleasant, [and] professional atmosphere at this small school, and my fellow students tend to help one another out rather than compete with each other.鈥 Unlike some law programs, 鈥減eople support one another here鈥攖hose Midwestern values of honesty, decency, forthrightness, and fairness one hears about in the abstract have an actual, everyday existence here in Dayton.鈥 Beyond academics, 鈥渟tudents are involved in student organizations,鈥 and 鈥渢here are always school and non-school gatherings to attend鈥 when you want to blow off steam. A 3L remembers, 鈥淢ost (and I mean most) students went out numerous nights a week, partying and drinking at bars close to the law school.鈥 Though some choose the school for its Catholic affiliation, the school鈥檚 Marianist ties are 鈥渄ownplayed鈥 in most cases. For those who would like to incorporate Catholic ethics into their educational experience, 鈥渞ich opportunities are present to get involved with the Catholic mission of the university.鈥
Throughout the law school, students love the University of Dayton鈥檚 atmosphere. 鈥淭he building at UDSL is spectacular in terms of the library, classrooms, and the ease at using computers.鈥 Around them, 鈥渢he undergraduate school is expanding; new buildings are sprouting all around campus.鈥 Sadly, some students feel that 鈥淒ayton is a dying city,鈥 which offers fewer social and recreational activities than some students would like; however, 鈥渢he surrounding area, such as Kettering or Oakwood, are very safe and classy.鈥 Adjacent to the University, Brown Street offers an eclectic row of restaurants and coffeehouses, and there is an array of nightlife options in the historic Oregon District.
