Students Say

St. John鈥檚 University School of Law鈥檚 鈥済reatest strength... is its willingness to go to bat for its students.鈥 鈥淔riends, alumni, and professors routinely make calls and write letters on behalf of students,鈥 one happy student says. St. John鈥檚 provides a 鈥渟trong alumni base, especially in the NYC area,鈥 and has 鈥渁 great reputation in the New York Judicial arena.鈥 Consequentially, graduates 鈥渉ave an edge in both NYC and Long Island firms.鈥 SJU 鈥渉as a very collegial atmosphere鈥 with 鈥渘o backstabbing.鈥 The friendly atmosphere is created in part by the fact that 鈥渆ach 1L class is divided into three groups that take all of their first year classes together.鈥 Students quickly make friends and 鈥渃amaraderie is pervasive, everyone works hard, [and] most are willing to help each other with outlines or forming study groups.鈥
鈥淭he teachers are uniformly excellent,鈥 and most 鈥渉ave an Ivy League background鈥 and are 鈥渆xperienced within their respective fields.鈥 These 鈥渁bsolutely amazing鈥 professors tend to have an 鈥渙pen door policy鈥 and 鈥渁re pleasant and willing to help.鈥 鈥淭he professor student interaction is great,鈥 although one student says there is 鈥渕uch too much emphasis on rote memorization of law that leads to cramming and a 鈥榖rain dump鈥 on a single final exam.鈥 鈥淭he professor takes a personal interest in his or her student鈥 and the school 鈥渆ncourages participation in its trial advocacy, moot court and journal programs.鈥 鈥淎 few (maybe 10 percent) of the Professors seem very unenthusiastic, like they don鈥檛 want to be there,鈥 but overall the teachers are 鈥渆xcellent鈥 and 鈥渁ccessible beyond belief.鈥
Student opinion on the administration is more divided. Some say that the 鈥渉elpful鈥 administration 鈥渨orks like clockwork.鈥 Others say 鈥渢he right hand never knows what the left is doing, and you can go to five different people with the same question and get five different answers.鈥 A 2L says, 鈥淚 would say the administration has your back. It鈥檚 not 鈥榰s and them;鈥 it鈥檚 鈥榰s.鈥欌 Students are friendly with the Dean, who 鈥渢ries to get to know everyone鈥 and is frequently seen 鈥渨alking around.鈥 By far the most common complaint is a rather unusual one: 鈥渢emperature regulation.鈥 The 鈥渃limate problem in the classrooms鈥 means that 鈥渋t can be fifty degrees in a room one day and ninety degrees the next day.鈥 鈥淪eriously, why is blazing hot in every other room?鈥 one sweaty student bemoans. Otherwise, 鈥渢he facilities are nice鈥 and 鈥渃lassrooms have all been re-done in recent years and utilize current technology.鈥 鈥淭he library is well organized and has a good variety of quiet areas and common areas for group work,鈥 when students need to study. 鈥淭he most valuable resource so far has been the Career Development Office,鈥 a 1L tells us. 鈥淚 was able to get instant feedback on cover letters and r茅sum茅s. In the end, this led to me landing a desirable summer internship rather quickly.鈥

Campus Life

Students Say

鈥淪top by the cafeteria at lunch time and the noise and energy make it obvious these students ACTUALLY LIKE each other!鈥 one student boasts. SJU students 鈥渁re helpful, friendly, and the competition is not cutthroat.鈥 Instead, students treat each other 鈥渓ike family鈥 although 鈥渋t is a bit cliquey at times.鈥 鈥淭he admissions department does a great job of recruiting bright, thoughtful, dynamic and diversified groups of students.鈥 That said, they do a poor job in 鈥渆thnic diversity鈥 and the student body is 鈥渁n utter white wash, though I think the school has improved that aspect over the last couple years.鈥
Despite being located in the NYC city limits, students say 鈥測ou need a car at St. John鈥檚鈥 if you want to get anywhere. 鈥淭he train ride to Manhattan is NOT reasonable,鈥 taking about an hour to get from campus to Times Square. 鈥淭here is practically nothing 鈥榳ithin walking distance,鈥 if you consider 鈥榳alking distance鈥 less than twenty minutes away,鈥 one student grumbles. Still, if you can brave the ride then all of New York City is at your disposal. 鈥淓verything is what you make of it,鈥 one student muses, 鈥渁nd St. John鈥檚 has a very large amount of opportunities to join groups that are highly involved, social, and supportive.鈥
