鈥淭he Charleston School of Law is rooted in the history and relationships of South Carolina's state capital and is anchored by the downtown civic hub known as the Four Corners of Law.鈥 One of only two law schools in the state, Charleston offers more than 100 sites for externship opportunities, three law reviews, and six academic tracks (including Public Policy & Service and Small Firm Practice). In addition to coursework, each student must complete at least 50 hours of pro bono service in order to graduate, which ensures that attendees finish the program with a full roster of experiences under their belt. The South Carolina Student Practice Rule helps to provide additional opportunities: Second-year students are able to conduct research and develop court strategies while third-year students take depositions, argue pre-trial motions, and take part in preliminary proceedings. This is 鈥減ractical experience with a focus on public service,鈥 which lets students graduate practice-ready. Overall, the 鈥渃ourse load is very manageable,鈥 and 鈥渢he opportunities to do faculty-assisted research are plentiful.鈥 As one student explains, 鈥淐SOL's emphasis on legal skills 鈥 has allowed me to align my classroom instruction with the practice of law.鈥
Charleston professors have 鈥渓ots of diverse experiences,鈥 and they 鈥渁re extremely knowledgeable in their fields.鈥 As such, these are individuals who 鈥渟pend a lot of time outside of the classroom preparing鈥 and are 鈥渁ccessible and supportive [in order to] balance preparation for the bar exam with preparation to be great lawyers.鈥 One student claims, 鈥淭hey are available all day, every day.鈥 Another adds, 鈥淭hey know our strengths and weaknesses, and they push us to be the best versions of ourselves.鈥 Additionally, the faculty is 鈥渁lways helping students find new pro bono work, and the school has contacts all over South Carolina and other states.鈥 In short, it's 鈥渁n environment where everyone wants to see the students succeed.鈥 The administration is 鈥渧ery open and are always willing to discuss difficult situations with the students.鈥 In short, 鈥渆veryone wants to see the students succeed,鈥 and the administration 鈥渨orks harder than anyone can imagine to prepare鈥 them for the Bar. As for the city itself, Charleston offers a 鈥渧ibrant legal community鈥 in which 鈥渕any students meet with prospective employers or experts on a particular topic often for lunch or to simply [seek] advice.鈥 While the 鈥渃lassrooms are a bit outdated,鈥 this doesn't impact education (鈥渢he environment is conducive to learning鈥) and the school is actively 鈥渓ooking to improve鈥 with renovations and expansions 鈥渃onstantly being made throughout each year.鈥 Overall, this is a 鈥渧ery rigorous but well-taught and well-thought-out program鈥 that offers future lawyers 鈥渆very resource we need to do well.鈥

Those who attend the school find Charleston to be a small slice of southern heaven: It's 鈥渙ne of the most beautiful and historic cities in South Carolina,鈥 says one attendee. Another calls it 鈥渁 veritable paradise for social activity.鈥 More generally, it's almost universally agreed that 鈥淐harleston is an incredible place to live,鈥 a fact that's drawn 鈥渟ome incredible professors to the school for that reason.鈥 Plus, since it's such a pleasant place to live, it also means 鈥渢he sense of community is unmatched鈥 and 鈥渞elations amongst students are good.鈥 Even better: students 鈥渟upport each other while remaining competitive.鈥 There are 鈥減lenty of clubs and activities designed to connect students,鈥 and 鈥渢here's very little stress,鈥 as people here 鈥渁re supportive, friendly, and will do whatever it takes to help you.鈥 The 鈥渟outhern hospitality is exuberant鈥 too: As one happy enrollee shares, 鈥淭he students that I've met this first year are truly some of the nicest [and] kindest people I've ever encountered.鈥
