It鈥檚 hard to beat Yale Law School, where the atmosphere is 鈥渉ighly intellectual鈥 and classes are mostly 鈥渟mall鈥 (first-year classes vary in size from fifteen to ninety students). One of the many uniquely cool things about Yale is that 鈥渢here aren鈥檛 very many required courses.鈥 All 1Ls must complete course work in constitutional law, contracts, procedure, and torts. There鈥檚 also a small, seminar-style legal research and writing course, and that鈥檚 pretty much it. Best of all, there are 鈥渘o grades.鈥 First semester classes are graded pass/fail. After first semester, there is some semblance of grades but, since Yale doesn鈥檛 keep track of class rank, it鈥檚 not a big deal.
Academically, 鈥渢his is the best place in the world.鈥 鈥淚t鈥檚 easy to learn about whatever you鈥檙e interested in, from medieval European law to helping immigrants in the modern-day United States,鈥 says one student. Yale is home to cutting-edge centers and programs galore. Clinical opportunities are vast and available 鈥渋n your first year,鈥 which is a rarity. You can represent family members in juvenile neglect cases, provide legal services for nonprofit organizations, or participate in complicated federal civil rights cases. It鈥檚 also 鈥渆asy鈥 to obtain joint-degrees or simply 鈥渃ross-register for other classes鈥 at Yale. A particularly unique program allows students to get a joint-degree at the Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs at Princeton.
Student report that the administration is 鈥済enerally friendly.鈥 Word on the faculty is mixed. 鈥淚 love all my professors,鈥 beams a 2L. 鈥淭hey will help me with anything.鈥 Nearly all agree that 鈥渕ost professors are delighted to help you.鈥 When jobs and clerkships are on the line, it鈥檚 not uncommon for professors to personally make calls on behalf of students 鈥渢o high-profile firms or government officials.鈥 Other students, however, tell us the faculty isn鈥檛 all it鈥檚 cracked up to be. 鈥淨uality teaching is not valued enough,鈥 gripes a critic. 鈥淧rofessors are hired based on their scholarship rather than their ability to teach or their interest in interacting with students.鈥
Employment prospects are simply awesome. A degree from Yale virtually guarantees 鈥渁n easy time finding a good job鈥 and a lifetime of financial security. There is 鈥渧ery solid career support鈥 (including 鈥渓ots of free wine鈥 at recruiting events). But did you know that Yale prolifically produces public interest attorneys? It鈥檚 true. Every one of Yale鈥檚 graduates could immediately take the big firm route but, each year, hordes of them don鈥檛. Yale 鈥渆ncourages diverse career paths鈥 and 鈥渘ontraditional routes鈥 (鈥渆specially in academia and public interest鈥) and annually awards dozens of public interest fellowships to current students and newly minted grads. There鈥檚 a 鈥済reat鈥 loan forgiveness program too.
Facilities are phenomenal. Yale boasts wireless Internet access throughout the Law School, wireless common areas, and perhaps the greatest law library in the history of humanity. 鈥淭he research facilities are spectacular.鈥 Aesthetically, 鈥渆verything is beautiful,鈥 especially if you are into 鈥渨ood paneling, stained glass windows, and hand-carved moldings.鈥 鈥淚f you care about architecture and Ivy League ambiance, come to Yale.鈥

Campus Life

Students Say

Though the student population 鈥渋s a bit Ivy heavy,鈥 it doesn鈥檛 necessarily follow that everyone is wealthy. Approximately 75 percent of the lucky souls here receive financial assistance of some kind. It does follow, however, that students are pretty conceited about their intelligence and their privileged educational status. 鈥淚f egos were light, an astronaut on the moon would have to shade his eyes from the glare of New Haven,鈥 analogizes one student. 鈥淚鈥檓 not sure there鈥檚 a cure for that, but it might not be wise to tell us in the first week of torts that many of us will wind up on the federal bench.鈥
鈥淭here are parties,鈥 swears a 1L. However, for many students, the social scene at Yale is simply an extension of academic life. Lectures and cultural events of all kinds are, of course, never-ending. The surrounding city of New Haven is lively in its own way and New York City and Boston are both easily accessible by train. On campus, Yale offers an 鈥渆ncouraging environment鈥 and a 鈥渨onderful community.鈥 鈥淏ecause of the small size of each class and the enormous number of activities, it is incredibly easy to get involved with journals (even the Journal) and any other student group you might want to try.鈥 鈥淪tudents are very engaged and motivated, but not generally in a way that stresses everyone else out,鈥 explains one student. 鈥淭he no-grades policy for first semester completely eliminates the competition I expect exists at other schools.鈥 鈥淧eople ask me what law school is like, and I can honestly say, 鈥業 work pretty hard, but it鈥檚 fun,鈥欌 says a satisfied student. 鈥淭hen those people stare at me oddly, and maybe they鈥檙e right that 鈥榝un鈥 isn鈥檛 exactly the right word. But I鈥檝e found it enriching and enjoyable and the people I鈥檝e met here have been great.鈥
