The once hidden gem of Washington University School of Law has now become one of the most well-respected law communities in the nation. The excellent academics, 鈥済enerous鈥 scholarships, and 鈥済reat course selections鈥 have made this a law school on the rise, and as firms in national metropolitan centers recognize this, WashU Law鈥檚 reputation only grows. This excellent reputation 鈥渉as been priceless in the current job market鈥 for recent graduates, and together, 鈥渢he student body and administration create a fantastic environment which helps to lessen the inevitable stress of law school.鈥
The 鈥渆xpert鈥 professors are 鈥渁s accessible as you can possibly find,鈥 and they 鈥渁re very good at what they do, especially the adjuncts,鈥 keeping the material 鈥渋nteresting鈥 while 鈥渞eally challenging you to critically think.鈥 They also 鈥渃are a whole lot about your career after school is over if you take time to reach out.鈥 Experience is not difficult to come by here, as WashULaw guarantees every interested JD student at least one clinical experience during their time in law school.
One student in particular agrees: 鈥淲ashington University has provided me the opportunity to gain practical experience while obtaining my JD. Since I've started last year, I've had internships with the New Jersey Attorney General, Federal Public Defender's Office, and the New York Attorney General.鈥 These individuals are 鈥渘ot short on theoretical understanding, either.鈥
The Career Services Office is 鈥渢op notch鈥 and serves as a huge draw to students in choosing WashULaw as their law school; it is 鈥渆xtremely engaged鈥 and 鈥済oes out of their way to connect you with employers, alumni, and other resources to aid you in your job search.鈥 鈥淭he CSO here is absolutely incredible and I wouldn't be at a different school for anything right now,鈥 says one student. If you want to take an extra semester to do an internship, the office 鈥渨ill work with you to make sure you are getting the educational experience you want, while still completing the requirements for graduation.鈥 Many students spend a semester in New York City working full time doing securities regulation while obtaining a full semester's worth of credits. Another claims, 鈥淲hen I was accepted to the school, they asked what city I wanted to work in when I graduated and what practice areas I was interested in. Soon after I provided this information, they began connecting me with countless attorneys doing exactly what I hope[d] to do in the same city that I want[ed] to do it.鈥
While WashU guarantees funding for 1L students working in the public interest and the school has a dedicated career advisor for public service, many students agree that there is 鈥渘ot enough support for public interest careers鈥 (particularly after your 1L summer). Still, it is clear to anyone who attends WashU Law that the school truly 鈥渓ooks out for its students,鈥 and administrators 鈥渁re SUPER helpful and bend over backwards to accommodate individual situations.鈥 The schools also host 鈥渁 medley of workshops every day in order to foster students' employment prospects in what is a very bad legal market.鈥 Hard work sees a direct result here. At WashULaw, students are not 鈥済uaranteed鈥 interviews during on and off campus interview programs鈥攖hey earn them on their own merit. Students are selected by employers based upon their unique qualifications.

Campus Life

Students Say

Students at WashU Law are 鈥渧ery friendly and social,鈥 as well as 鈥渞elatively laid-back.鈥 People are 鈥渃ompetitive, but friendly;鈥 if you miss class, 鈥測our friends will be more than happy to give you their notes.鈥 The school does an excellent job of maintaining a culture of hard work and general sociability. 鈥淢y classmates are extremely bright and I know they will be excellent connections to have throughout my career,鈥 says a student. Student life is 鈥渁mazing,鈥 and everyone is 鈥渧ery happy鈥ell-adjusted,鈥 and 鈥渉ave a lot going on outside of the classroom, including good groups of friends.鈥 鈥淲e are a very social school, I go out with my classmates frequently,鈥 says one student.
The law school building is 鈥渂eautiful,鈥 particularly the twenty-four-hour library reading room (鈥渓ike something out of Harry Potter鈥) and the central courtyard where 鈥渟tudents gather during the day and at weekly Happy Hour each Friday.鈥 鈥淚 feel like just being in the building makes me smarter,鈥 says one student. Aside from the Friday Happy Hour, the SBA organizes a 鈥渨ell-attended鈥 bar review every Thursday, which features drink specials and more socializing. St. Louis is 鈥渁 great place to spend three years,鈥 as 鈥渢here's plenty of things to do, the housing is cheap, and the city has lots of personality,鈥 according to one student. The student body is a mix of recent grads and older students, and though the older students with spouses and families are 鈥渓ess involved in the traditional social scene,鈥 they do not feel 鈥渓ost and alone amongst the twenty-two-year-olds.鈥 Most people here are more liberal-minded, and there is a consensus that this 鈥渢ype of homogeny could use a little breaking up,鈥 if only for the sake of discourse.
