Founded by Thomas Jefferson himself, the University of Virginia School of Law is one of the oldest law schools in the country, and has educated generations of lawyers and turned out hundreds of law firm heads, law clerks, and judges. There is a wide variety of classes to choose from (including a selection of short courses in January), and there are 鈥減lenty of opportunities to get practical experience through a well-developed pro bono program鈥� and the clinics. 鈥淔or example, right now I'm taking an estate planning class where I actually get to draft wills and trusts under the guidance of two leading practitioners,鈥� says a 2L.
The focus on the student experience is 鈥渁pparent throughout the entire law school,鈥� and the faculty is 鈥渋ncredibly accessible,鈥� which gives students the 鈥渦nparalleled鈥� opportunity to rub elbows with 鈥渟ome of the best legal scholars in the nation.鈥� Members of the faculty have previously served in high level government positions, or are former federal prosecutors, to name a few. The school's reputation among lawyers is 鈥減henomenal,鈥� and the Career Services department 鈥済ives fantastic advice, works hard to help students make connections to markets all across the U.S., and are incredibly friendly and accessible.鈥� The staff 鈥渨alk us through every step of finding and getting jobs that we are excited about.鈥� There is a ton of engagement with the institution at UVA, 鈥減recisely because students don't vanish into the ether once class ends for the day.鈥� Students also have many opportunities to have 鈥渁 significant influence鈥� on the law school's governance and policies through the Student Bar Association. The school is generally receptive of student influence in the improvement and alteration of academic policies, 鈥渨hich is quite empowering for students.鈥�

Everyone is 鈥渇riendly and helpful, from the Dean to the librarians to the people who work in the coffee shop.鈥� The UVA peer advisory system, in which each 1L section is assigned six upper-class mentors to welcome them to school, helps ease new students into life at this 鈥渇riendly, welcoming, and well-organized environment,鈥� and provides guidance on 鈥渆verything from learning how to brief cases to applying for jobs to navigating the social scene.鈥� This type of mentorship 鈥渋s invaluable鈥� and 鈥渇osters UVA's famous sense of collegiality from year to year.鈥�
Classrooms are well-equipped with the latest technology, and there are 鈥減lenty of comfortable and well-lit places to study throughout the law school.鈥� The student services wing of the law school building was 鈥渂eautifully renovated鈥� over the summer to expand the admissions, career services, and clinic offices, and the city of Charlottesville is 鈥渁mazing.鈥� There's 鈥渁 lot to do around here for such a relatively small place,鈥� including 鈥済reat food, great music, UVA sports... [and] good hiking nearby,鈥� and D.C. is just a couple of hours away. 鈥淚 think that it is telling that 3Ls dislike talking about having to leave the law school at the end of the year, wishing that their law school careers could last longer,鈥� says a happy student.
