Students Say

Admittedly, 鈥渓aw school is tough.鈥 Yet UCLA manages to do 鈥渁 really good job of making the process as enjoyable as possible.鈥 A large part of that has to do with the fact that the university provides students with 鈥渢he perfect mix between a world-class education and a laid back environment.鈥 Academically, students are privy to 鈥渁 wide array of classes that are innovative and challenging.鈥 There is a 鈥渉uge focus鈥 on 鈥渃linical/experiential learning鈥 and many of these 鈥渃linics [result in] some unique opportunities, such as litigating environmental issues and helping inexperienced filmmakers get their film to market.鈥 Even first years are able to get their hands dirty with 鈥1L moot court, transactional competitions, mock trial, and journals.鈥

Importantly, students here gush when asked about their 鈥渙utstanding鈥 professors. They love that the faculty is comprised of 鈥渢rue scholars with a passion for teaching.鈥 They also value that their instructors 鈥渃ome from a range of backgrounds鈥 and 鈥渨ere practicing lawyers before entering academia.鈥 Another hallmark of UCLA professors? Well, they鈥檙e 鈥渆xtremely accessible鈥 and the vast majority make sure that their office hours are 鈥渇lexible.鈥 A decent number even deign to 鈥渢ake students out for lunch鈥 every now and again!

Not to be outdone, the school鈥檚 administration is 鈥渁mazing鈥 in its own right and 鈥済enerally very responsive.鈥 As this impressed student shares, 鈥淲henever I have a question about financial aid, enrollment, or internships, the person I talk to about it is eager to help me or point me in the direction of someone else who can help.鈥 And an astonished classmate adds that they are 鈥渟uper supportive to the point where by your last final 1L year, they鈥檙e waiting for you outside, ready to serve you celebratory cake.鈥

Lastly, UCLA law students also rush to highlight the 鈥渋ncredible鈥 Office of Career Services, which will 鈥渄o anything and everything to help you.鈥 One grateful student illustrates, 鈥淚鈥檝e had my resume reviewed in-depth twice...Each time the reviewer was responsive well beyond normal business hours. My counselor was on call to provide any information I needed whenever I needed it.鈥 All in all, students happily report that a UCLA JD leads to 鈥渄esirable job placement for students and alumni.鈥

Campus Life

Students Say

Students readily assert that 鈥淯CLA鈥檚 strongest selling point...is its environment.鈥 As one happy individual surmises, 鈥淢aybe its the West LA location, but students who come to UCLA generally chill out when they get here.鈥 Sure, you will encounter 鈥渟ome competition.鈥 However, most people are 鈥渧ery collegial鈥 and 鈥渋t鈥檚 not hard to make friends that will have your back.鈥 Many people do admit that 鈥渢he student body definitely leans liberal.鈥 And a smattering of individuals suggest that their peers can appear to be 鈥渋ntolerant of conservative and moderate opinions.鈥 One student even complains that 鈥渢his makes some classes feel rather uncomfortable, and every student who argues a non-progressive viewpoint has to qualify their statements.鈥 Others counter that 鈥渃onservative voices are not silenced in the classroom鈥 and that there are 鈥渕any productive conversations and debates between individuals who fall on different ends of the political spectrum.鈥

No matter your viewpoint, UCLA makes it easy to lead a robust life beyond the classroom. Many people note that the 鈥渟tudent body association does a good job of planning events.鈥 Additionally, 鈥渕ost students live in one of two apartment complexes (arranged through the school), which makes it easy to go grab a drink or a bite with a classmate.鈥 And, of course, there are 鈥渢ons of student organizations鈥 in which you can participate.
