Academics
The University of New Orleans is a public research university in one of the world鈥檚 most fascinating and unique cities. This 鈥渘ot too big, not too small鈥 school is a 鈥渄iverse environment that makes it a welcoming area to be鈥 and provides 鈥渓ots of opportunities to develop our personality, leadership skills, and career skills.鈥 The diversity is a huge draw to students from all over the world (international students can even receive financial aid), and UNO 鈥渙pens doors to students who come from different social and economic backgrounds,鈥 giving them 鈥渢he opportunity to get an education that helps students to get a better future.鈥 Professors at this 鈥渋nclusive鈥 school 鈥減ush students to do excellence.鈥 You 鈥渃an always find them in their office during office hours,鈥 and they 鈥渞eally connect with students.鈥 The engineering, film, and accounting programs are all popular programs at UNO (accounting is one of the few accredited by AACSB International), and classes stress real-world applicability. 鈥淭here has never been a moment at UNO that I wasn鈥檛 able to leave the classroom and go apply what I learned to my job immediately,鈥 says one part-time student. 鈥淢y professors are generous with their time and knowledge,鈥 says another. Class sizes are small, and many classes focus on discussion, which 鈥渁llows for increased learning and understanding.鈥 The school is 鈥渂lessed鈥 with having a large traditional student body matched with an equal percentage of nontraditional students (adult education), which 鈥渁llows great mentorship between students and also pushed both sides to be aware of how they can positively affect the other generation鈥檚 education.鈥
Student Body
More so than most schools, there really is no typical at this 鈥渧ery eclectic university,鈥 other than 鈥渄etermined, hardworking, and considerate.鈥 The school鈥檚 large number of international students, adult learners, commuters, and locals 鈥渢end to get along rather well,鈥 with 鈥渢hose who live right on or near campus probably being more close-knit.鈥 Many students live off campus and work full time, which 鈥渃reates in an environment where the people in your classes are there for a purpose.鈥 People here are 鈥渧ery colorful and outgoing鈥 and 鈥渉ave no problem expressing themselves whether it鈥檚 through clothing, lifestyles, or speech.鈥 鈥淚t is very easy to make friends here,鈥 says a student.
Campus Life
Obviously, the fact that the school is located in New Orleans 鈥渋s a big plus,鈥 and 鈥渢here is never a dull moment.鈥 鈥淓ating and nightlife in New Orleans is a big part of our lives,鈥 says a student. 鈥淭here is so much to do on campus and around the city, students often have to make efforts to keep their social calendars in check so that they have time to study,鈥 says a student. The campus is large enough to offer 鈥渕any diverse academic, extracurricular, and social activities,鈥 yet small enough to easily access all classes. However, 鈥渦pgrading facilities鈥 (and cleaning them) is on the wish list of pretty much everyone here. UNO offers 鈥減lenty of on campus activities鈥 for students 鈥渢o meet and work with other students of all backgrounds,鈥 including sports, movies, and 鈥渁 lot of free entertainment.鈥 There are also 鈥渁lways political discussions happening on campus, as well as debates.鈥 鈥淵ou can feel at home here but not get bored,鈥 says a student. The older students feel similarly comfortable in their environment. 鈥淚 am unusual in that I am a much older student living on campus. Yet, the younger students have accepted me warmly and I have many friends,鈥 says one.
