Academics
With a 鈥渂eautiful campus鈥 and 鈥渇riendly atmosphere,鈥 it鈥檚 quite easy to understand how students could be drawn to University of Louisiana at Lafayette. This public research university strives to provide undergrads with an affordable education and offers an 鈥渁bundance [of] scholarship opportunities.鈥 Undergrads also appreciate the breadth of fantastic academic departments, from the 鈥渨onderful鈥 nursing program and the 鈥渆xceptional biology program鈥 to the 鈥済ood architecture program鈥 and 鈥減henomenal art [department].鈥 And, since it鈥檚 鈥渟maller than most state schools,鈥 undergrads here are really able to interact with their professors and receive 鈥渜uality in-class instruction.鈥 Indeed, students seem to thoroughly enjoy their courses. This can definitely be attributed to 鈥渁mazing faculty.鈥 As an English major explains, 鈥淢ost of the professors I鈥檝e had have been very passionate about their subjects, which in turn makes the student interested in the class. They鈥檙e all very open to questions and discussions.鈥 A fellow English student agrees, 鈥淢y professors have been helpful and knowledgeable, and they are always willing to help their students succeed.鈥 Perhaps this premed student best sums up the experience here: 鈥淯L is all about melding creativity, spicy Cajun culture, and academia into a gumbo-pot of successful scholars!鈥
Student Body
Undergrads at UL steadfastly insist that 鈥渢here is no typical...student.鈥 Those who enroll here will discover all types, 鈥渇rom quiet students [and] outgoing students [to] sporty students [and] artsy students.鈥 A biology major explains, 鈥淲e have students of all ethnicities, races, religions, and styles. There are very few social boundaries and mostly everyone is accepting of our diverse student body.鈥 Of course, when pressed, one journalism major admits that there is a typical UL Lafayette undergrad, one that 鈥渞eflects Lafayette鈥檚 culture: creative, friendly, and food-loving.鈥 Many are also 鈥渋nvolved in Greek life, and therefore [frequently participate] in community service and [embody] school spirit.鈥 By and large, undergrads also report that their peers are 鈥渄edicated and determined to succeed.鈥 Finally, an art education major encapsulates her fellow students by simply stating, 鈥淓veryone accepts one another for who they are. There are friends for everyone.鈥 And 鈥渁s long as you make it a point to get out of your dorm once in a while, you will have close knit circle of friends in no time.鈥
Campus Life
Students who attend University of Louisiana at Lafayette will likely never be bored. There鈥檚 always something of which to take advantage. To begin with, we鈥檙e told that 鈥渁 lot of the buzz around campus [surrounds] sports.鈥 An English major confirms, 鈥淔ootball is a major thing in South Louisiana. I think we鈥檙e the second biggest 鈥榮ports fan base鈥 behind LSU, of course.鈥 Come game day, many people 鈥渢ailgate and there is a big community of RVs and tents from [both] out-of-towners and [those who reside] on campus.鈥 Students also report that 鈥渢he Ragin Cajun Catholics and Christian community is awesome and dynamic!鈥 Many undergrads can also be found 鈥渨orking out in the gym.鈥 And a large number participate in Greek life as well. Lastly, students love the area surrounding UL. A biology major happily shares, 鈥淭hroughout the year, there are tons of festivals unique to Lafayette, all of which are free to attend, such as Festivale Acadiens, which celebrates Cajun culture, as well as Festivale Internationale, which is the largest free world-music festival in the world.鈥
