Academics
Lourdes College is small Catholic school 10 miles west of Toledo that 鈥渃aters to the nontraditional student,鈥 offering 鈥渆xcellent academics鈥 and 鈥渃onvenient鈥 schedules. With a strong 鈥渟piritual component鈥 and an 鈥渆mphasis on service,鈥 Lourdes is 鈥渁 perfect environment for learning.鈥 鈥淭he concept is to learn so you can give back,鈥 says one student. Professors 鈥渢each with enthusiasm,鈥 鈥渁re always there for you鈥---鈥淥ne-on-one attention [is] plentiful鈥---and bring 鈥渞eal-world experience鈥 to the classroom. 鈥淚 know what I am learning from them can be applied to what I will be doing in the future,鈥 declares one student. The library could use 鈥渆xtended hours,鈥 but the 鈥渢otally accessible鈥 administration staff is 鈥渁lways there to listen and help.鈥 鈥淚 feel like I can go and talk to anyone in the school about any subject,鈥 relates a senior. 鈥淚 love this college,鈥 agrees another, 鈥淚f I could stay, I would. Actually, I鈥檓 considering a master鈥檚 program.鈥
Student Body
鈥淪tudents range from new high school graduates to people in their sixties鈥 and 鈥渇rom black to white to Hispanic and Asian,鈥 but they are predominantly 鈥渁round 25--30,鈥 and 鈥渇emale鈥 and 鈥渉ave families and other responsibilities.鈥 Most chose Lourdes because it is 鈥渃lose by.鈥 鈥淭hey have previous careers and are coming to Lourdes College to seek their dreams or change careers,鈥 states one student. People are 鈥渟erious鈥 here. They want 鈥渢o get an education and to do well.鈥 That doesn鈥檛 keep them from being 鈥渧ery friendly and easy to get along with.鈥 鈥淓verybody is so nice, and I鈥檓 not just saying that,鈥 swears a junior.
Campus Life
鈥淚f you are looking for the typical college experience, Lourdes is probably not the place for you,鈥 confides a student. 鈥淚t鈥檚 not a party school.鈥 鈥淭here are no dorms鈥 on this 鈥減retty little campus,鈥 but 鈥淪tudents still meet, mingle, and study in the main building on campus.鈥 鈥淚n warmer weather you can find students hanging out on the campus lawn.鈥 Social life consists of 鈥渟hows, associations, [and] intramural sports,鈥 though the hours can be a bit weird---鈥淢ost activities are scheduled at odd times when people are working.鈥 However, because 鈥淎pproximately 60 percent of students are nontraditional,鈥 many are 鈥渢oo busy鈥 with other responsibilities to engage in much extracurricular life anyway. 鈥淟ourdes is a college that focuses on academics yet understands that students have a life outside of school,鈥 says a business major. 鈥淚 chose Lourdes College because it met my needs as a returning college student working full-time during the day.鈥
