Academics
Students of the Christian Brothers University in Memphis, Tennessee say the school 鈥減rovides a complete education for the future鈥 by 鈥渟tressing the importance of service to the community at large鈥 and providing 鈥渁pproachable, available professors鈥 who 鈥渁re dedicated to helping us learn and succeed in the 鈥榬eal world.鈥欌 鈥淪mall class sizes allow鈥 students to 鈥渞eally know your professors, [and] allow for more opportunities to get involved academically and professionally.鈥 Students praise their professors, saying they 鈥渓ove the level of engagement in the classroom. . . . Each of them know the students well and the material even better. They give a whole new life to the otherwise tedious work and lecture.鈥 And while their 鈥渃lasses may be challenging,鈥 students say that they get out what they put in. Faculty here 鈥渁re all very willing to provide help if needed,鈥 and 鈥渁ll professors are fair in their grading.鈥 Many students found their education 鈥渧ery applicable to real-life situations.鈥 However, some complain that their professors have been in academia too long and have lost focus on business or career realities and therefore 鈥渄on鈥檛 really make their lessons interesting or relevant to what鈥檚 going on today.鈥 Because of this, 鈥渋n some of the courses,鈥 one business major told us, 鈥淚 feel like I have to teach myself.鈥 Others complain that the science equipment has spent a bit too much time on campus as well: 鈥淭he school could improve by providing more up to date equipment, especially in the science lab where equipment from over thirty years ago is still used when it needs to be replaced.鈥
Student Body
Students tell us that most of their peers 鈥渁re very open-minded and accepting, which allows them to fit in easily in nearly any situation.鈥 Everyone agrees that CBU students are 鈥渟tudious during the week, but still can socialize during the weekend and can commit themselves to extra-curricular activities such as community work, Greek life, or intramurals.鈥 Beyond those extra-curriculars, 鈥渢here are very few campus interactions between students enrolled in different majors鈥 because 鈥渆ach School has their own building鈥 where the majority of its classes are held. In the end students say 鈥渨e all fit in with our own cliques of friends, but rally together as one when the time comes to show just how great CBU is.鈥
Campus Life
Students who are involved in campus activities say they 鈥渓ove on campus life鈥 because 鈥渢here are always activities being organized by the various on campus groups and organizations鈥 and the school maintains 鈥渁 fun and safe environment for everyone.鈥 Others are more likely to 鈥渒eep [their] nose to the grindstone to get in and get out like most students.鈥 Generally CBU students 鈥渢end to get involved in one organization very extensively, and this defines what kind of activities they do for fun.鈥 Most students agree that commuters don鈥檛 take as active a role in campus activities at CBU. When asked about campus life, one commuter students simply told us, 鈥淚鈥檓 a commuter student,鈥 while other commuters explained that 鈥渢here is nothing to do for commuters here at Christian Brothers鈥 because campus events cater to those who 鈥渓ive in on-campus housing.鈥 Some students look elsewhere for social opportunities: 鈥淚 take full advantage of the educational opportunities that CBU offers and spend my recreational time at the University of Memphis campus. This decision has somewhat provided me with a 鈥榖est of both worlds鈥 situation.鈥
