Academics

University of Memphis is a large research institution that might fit the bill for those of you dreaming of a university where you can pick from 鈥渟o many majors and minors鈥 and where the school goes above and beyond to "stay connected with their students and reach out on multiple levels." Enrollees rave about 鈥渢he variety of courses offered, and the passion brought to each course鈥 by instructors. While many mention the rigor of their coursework, they also note that UofM 鈥渉as every resource that a student needs to achieve,鈥 including 鈥済reat professors, a great library, tutoring for every subject matter, and all-around great facility.鈥

Of these resources, students mention again and again how 鈥渁mazing [professors are] at what they do.鈥 As one puts it, 鈥淢ost of my professors prep well and build their courses in a way that challenges our knowledge of the content and allows us to become masters over it. Very seldom do I not feel challenged or feel as though class time was wasted.鈥 There's also an appreciation for the way in which instructors not only 鈥渂ring real-life experience to the lectures鈥 but to after-class guidance sessions. Teachers are described as 鈥渧ery accommodating and willing to help,鈥 holding 鈥渙ffice hours and staying after if [someone] needs extra help.鈥 This isn't just about grades either: 鈥淔aculty and staff care about the mental and physical wellbeing of students as well as the educational aspect.鈥 In short, these are 鈥減rofessors that genuinely want students to thrive鈥 in all aspects of their life鈥攏ot just as enrollees, but toward success post-graduation.

Student Body

The 鈥淯niversity of Memphis, like the city of Memphis, truly is a perfect picture of the American Melting Pot.鈥 Students pride themselves on fact that their classmates are 鈥渋ncredibly diverse in terms of age, economic privilege, race, and gender.鈥 With such a cohort, attendees love celebrating and exploring 鈥渘ew ideas and perspectives鈥 together. Ask one of them and they鈥檒l tell you that Tigers are 鈥渉ardworking students鈥ho are attempting to better themselves intellectually, professionally, or personally.鈥 At UofM, you鈥檙e in a community that鈥檚 鈥減assionate about learning鈥 and filled with students who see themselves as on a 鈥渏ourney together, not a competition, so everyone is very supportive.鈥 And when they say everyone, they mean everyone. This institution has a 鈥済ood mix of traditional and nontraditional or transfer students.鈥 In other words, there鈥檚 not one-student-fits-all. Plenty of enrollees 鈥渉ave jobs, families, and other obligations [outside the university] in addition to being students.鈥 As one undergrad says it best: 鈥淧erhaps what makes the students unique is that you see the same students go on to work and be voices in their community.鈥

Campus Life

Days at the University of Memphis can be long, especially if you're a commuter. But students are still active far beyond their on-campus study hours, or the way they "often meet up with friends to have lunch together between classes." There's a real drive to enjoy all that the campus and city have to offer: 鈥渢here鈥檚 always something going on, [like] a prominent speaker to go see, something with Student Life, or even just the food trucks that come to campus.鈥 Undergrads also generate a lot of additional activities: the school is "brimming with club booths" and organizations, many of which are 鈥渟tudent-led and created.鈥 From college ministry to Greek life and 鈥渟ocial clubs to art clubs to criminal justice clubs,鈥 there's plenty to do, although the most popular activities tend to be 鈥渁ttending UofM Tiger sports鈥 or heading to the 鈥淩ec Center because there鈥檚 so much to do.鈥

University of Memphis students are 鈥渋ntertwined with the city.鈥 There are 鈥渢ons of volunteering opportunities for our communities,鈥 explains one, while another talks about the joy of 鈥渁dventuring into Memphis great food selection,鈥 particularly what they consider the "best barbecue in the world." This "lively city" has "many parks, recreation areas, and strips with interesting restaurants, bars, and shops," and "the night life can be really fun." Whether you're exploring campus or the city, UofM provides 鈥渁 home away from home.鈥
