Academics

Barton College is a 鈥渟mall鈥 school with a lot of heart. From the moment you step onto the campus, the 鈥渇amily-like atmosphere鈥 becomes palpable. And undergrads quickly boast that 鈥渋ntimate class sizes鈥 and 鈥渃lose relationships with professors鈥 are a staple of life here. The college also has plenty of non-traditional students and many are grateful to discover peers in their own 鈥渁ge group.鈥 Moreover, flexible class schedules make it relatively easy for undergrads to balance both work and family obligations. Academically, students brag about the 鈥済reat鈥 nursing program as well as stellar education and social work departments. Across the board, students happily describe their professors as 鈥渁wesome.鈥 Indeed, they 鈥渢ake the time to get to know each of their students and they make themselves very accessible.鈥 Importantly, they also have a knack for 鈥渂ringing real world鈥xperiences [into] the classroom.鈥 Further, Barton 鈥減rofessors are excellent at presenting the information in a way you can understand, and most have an open door policy that allows students to just walk right in their office for help whenever the door is open.鈥 Undergrads also truly appreciate the fact their teachers 鈥渁re very accommodating [when it comes] to individual students' situations.鈥 Finally, as one highly content junior sums up, 鈥淢y school is all about helping their students find their passion, achieve their goals, and making their dreams a reality.鈥

Student Body

A 鈥渓aid back鈥 group, Barton students do tend to prioritize their education. Indeed, a biology major quietly reveals that his friends certainly 鈥渟tudy a lot.鈥 Fortunately, these 鈥渟tereotypically southern鈥 undergrads can quickly break out of their academic mode and frequently display their 鈥渇un鈥 and 鈥済oofy鈥 sides. A handful of students tell us that many of their peers can be categorized as either 鈥淕reek鈥 or an 鈥渁thlete.鈥 Luckily, most everyone is 鈥渇riendly and kind鈥 and we鈥檝e been assured that 鈥渋t's pretty easy to find a group of people that you fit in with.鈥 And that鈥檚 precisely what you would expect from a college where students 鈥渉old doors鈥 and 鈥減eople go out of their way for one another.鈥 Lastly, as one nursing major matter-of-factly summarizes, 鈥淭he typical student is one that knows how to study and do homework, but still have a social life. Most students feel like they fit in because everyone is in the same boat trying to stay sane while keeping up with school work and hanging out with friends.鈥

Campus Life

While some people refer to Barton as a 鈥渟uitcase college鈥 and a few students might gripe that 鈥渁 lot of people go home for the weekends,鈥 others insist that 鈥渢here is always something fun to do, whatever your interests.鈥 As an elementary education major shares, 鈥淚 have a lot of fun participating in activities that our campus activities board puts together. [For] example, last week they had free manicures and pedicures on campus.鈥 Additionally, 鈥渁 lot of students get involved in Greek life and clubs related to their major.鈥 Athletics are also fairly big at Barton and basketball especially is 鈥渧ery popular.鈥 Unfortunately, hometown Wilson doesn鈥檛 offer too much excitement. However, students love to head into town to 鈥渨atch movies鈥 or 鈥済o out to the bowling alley.鈥 And, when undergrads are thirsty for a little more adventure, they can always head to nearby Raleigh.
