Academics
Guilford鈥檚 legendarily 鈥渁ccepting culture鈥 arises through the incorporation of a number of core tenets that include 鈥渄iversity, equality, community, stewardship, etc.鈥 The school is 鈥渁 place where you can express yourself free from judgment,鈥 and 鈥渋mpacts every aspect of your life and continues to carry you as part of its family even after you graduate.鈥 Students are given the opportunity to make all of their own choices, and the school works at 鈥減roviding support for those decisions,鈥 and heavily promotes the idea 鈥渢hat doing things the hard way is usually worth it.鈥 The Quaker college is known for being green (to put it mildly), and the administration works to raise 鈥渟tudent and individual awareness of the environment and everyday life through education and service learning.鈥 The level of engagement of the students is matched only by the school鈥檚 willingness to listen; student involvement is in everything from policy changes to food options, and 鈥渃an be one person鈥檚 efforts or many.鈥 鈥淚 know someone who campaigned for getting coffee in the cafeteria鈥檚 ice cream selection, and this year we had a trial run that seems to have gone over well,鈥 says a sophomore. Still, a few students do think the administration could let up on 鈥減arenting the students.鈥 Professors are able to 鈥渃reate an environment that invites discussion of materials from different perspectives鈥 that 鈥淸pushes] and [supports] you at the same time.鈥 The 鈥渋ntensity of academic learning鈥 means that 鈥測our absence in a class does not go unnoticed,鈥 unsurprising at a place where teachers are called by their first name (鈥渨hich is really awesome鈥). The small scale class sizes 鈥渞eally allow for individual attention and academic growth.鈥 Most classrooms are arranged with the desks in a circle and the classes are 鈥渉ighly interactive鈥; every class 鈥渋s filled with questions for the class to answer, even simple questions.鈥
