The University of Pennsylvania鈥檚 Wharton School, one of the premier MBA programs in the world, is best known for its 鈥渟trong finance reputation,鈥 but the curriculum鈥檚 鈥渟trong emphasis on quantitative analysis鈥 extends 鈥渁cross many disciplines, not just finance but marketing, entrepreneurship, operations, international business, real estate, etc.鈥 as well. All areas present a 鈥渉olistic program with a mix of case studies, traditional lecture formats, experiential learning opportunities, and strong co-curricular programs.鈥

Students brag that Wharton 鈥減rovides all the resources necessary for us to succeed, and then some,鈥 reporting that 鈥渢he difficult part here is deciding between which resources鈥 lectures, seminars, simulations, clubs, special events鈥攐ne can fit into one鈥檚 schedule.鈥 Writes one student, 鈥淭he breadth and depth of the academic curriculum and the extracurricular activities is so huge that I would need at least six MBA years to experience 20 percent of it all.鈥 A heavy workload, described as 鈥渄ifficult for everyone but the most brilliant to manage,鈥 makes those choices even tougher. But what impresses students most here is the degree to which students themselves contribute to the learning experience. Wharton uses a 鈥渃o-production model of learning鈥 that 鈥渞equires engagement from all participants in the Wharton community.鈥 One MBA observes, 鈥淪tudents sometimes add more value than assigned readings. Students make Wharton. 鈥楽tudent-run鈥 is an understatement.鈥 Another agrees, 鈥淭he 鈥榗o-production model鈥 is not just a buzz word; it really exists here.鈥

Under the Wharton pedagogic system, 鈥渃lasses build on each other. Professors are known to coordinate timing of discussing certain topics to ensure that the student has mastered the concept in another class.鈥 Much work here is done in teams. To promote cooperation and reduce competitiveness, Wharton policy currently forbids grade disclosure to recruiters. Students report that the policy 鈥渇osters an environment of helping at the school.鈥 Nondisclosure apparently has little impact on students鈥 motivation to work. One notes, 鈥淭he school has high expectations for each admit, and the overall performance of the students rises to that expectation.鈥
