Academics

Stanford鈥檚 Graduate School of Business offers a selective, top-ranked MBA program in close proximity to the hub of technology and venture capital sectors. So it鈥檚 no surprise that many professors are 鈥渁ctively involved in the Silicon Valley business community鈥and] bring鈥ractical experience into the classroom.鈥 And perhaps that鈥檚 why you hear Stanford鈥檚 students throwing out terms like 鈥渃utting edge鈥 and 鈥渋nnovation hub鈥 to describe its academics. Yet it鈥檚 Stanford鈥檚 鈥渦nusual鈥 culture that ends up selling Stanford鈥檚 competitive and 鈥渕ission-oriented鈥 cohort on the program. Administration and faculty together promote an 鈥渆ffective鈥 and 鈥渦nparalleled culture of vulnerability and growth,鈥 amid an academic experience 鈥渃haracterized by personal discovery鈥nd other soft-skill development.鈥 Like other brand-name MBA programs in the country, Stanford has a policy of grade non-disclosure to recruiters, which some students say encourages them 鈥渢o truly experiment鈥 during their tenure. This is also facilitated by GSBs flexible curriculum, which lets first-year students take any number of electives, in contrast with other business-school models that emphasize a more rigid foundation. Yet some students have commented on the 鈥渇oundation[al] curriculum鈥 being 鈥渟atisfactory but鈥ot great,鈥 and 鈥渓ess rigorous quantitatively or in terms of student preparation for the required curriculum as some peer schools.鈥 That being said, the 鈥渆lective classes are unbelievably well-taught and incredibly interesting.鈥
