It is not difficult to sum up the qualities that draw students to San Diego State University鈥檚 Graduate School of Business. One student explains, 鈥淸It鈥檚 a] nice location for me, good class times, a competitive curriculum, and a good solid reputation for a great up-and-coming business program and full and part time MBA programs.鈥 Those views are consistent throughout the comments about this 鈥渜uite affordable鈥 local school that has 鈥渁 great business reputation.鈥 Though some air complaints about a few 鈥渕ostly uninterested鈥 professors, the consensus is that SDSU鈥檚 business program is the 鈥渂est quality for the money.鈥 Couple a 鈥渇lexible program鈥 with a 鈥渓arge networking base鈥 and attendees will find 鈥渁 community with numerous opportunities to give back and share [one鈥檚] new skills in constructive ways.鈥
What students walk away with will depend on their own focus and drive, since the 鈥渜uality of professors is highly volatile and you can鈥檛 be sure how well they will teach or lecture.鈥 However, when the professors are good, the classroom experience is very worthwhile. Business students are glad that 鈥減rofessors with long work experience are common.鈥 For example, one student boasts, 鈥淭he two courses in my last semester consisted of a senior director and a CEO from Qualcomm (a Fortune 500) and biotech firm, respectively.鈥 That 鈥渓arge depth of experience and knowledge鈥 these educators share with their students suggests 鈥減rofessors promote critical thinking in class, as opposed to just lecturing. More emphasis is placed on in-depth analysis than on test taking.鈥 One student without a strong background in business was glad to note, 鈥淭his school made my transition from a non-business background to a business program very smooth.鈥
Such experience extends to the students. 鈥淔ifty percent of people have their own business in my classes,鈥 one student notes. Even for those without a wealth of previous business experience, SDSU offers a 鈥渃onsistently [top] ranked鈥 entrepreneurship program and a Sports MBA program that boasts 鈥渁ccess to many higher-ups in the sports industry in the San Diego and Southern California area.鈥 It also takes part in a Venture Capital Investment Competition that gains big exposure for participants. Some students worry that 鈥渞idiculous budget cuts鈥 will mar the MBA program, but for others the future looks bright. Current administrators are 鈥渢ransforming the program,鈥 and the school is 鈥渋ntegrating lecturers into the courses,鈥 all of which indicates a program that is sometimes 鈥渇lying by the seat of its pants鈥 but is generally on the upswing.
