Business students looking to catch a ride on the Asian economic boom would do well to consider The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST), the 鈥渢op MBA school in Asia鈥� with a 鈥渟trategic location at the heart of Asia.鈥� 鈥淭he focus of the program is on the region,鈥� and the program is in 鈥渁 perfect location to leverage Asia鈥檚 booming economy.鈥� 鈥淓ver since my studies, I have had the ambition to prepare myself for a career in the Asian region,鈥� one student says, explaining the decision to attend HKUST. Academics at HKUST can be intense, and the 鈥渨orkload is a killer.鈥� 鈥淲e need 100+ hours a week鈥� to complete homework, classes, group projects, discussion, and club activities, according to one student. Although students also note that 鈥渢he school is very supportive.鈥� The Administration 鈥渕ust be the friendliest and [most] helpful bunch of people I have ever met.鈥�

Despite the problems students have with the MBA office, they are much happier with the professors. 鈥淥verall the school has brilliant teachers that are balanced between academia and business experience,鈥� offering a 鈥渘ice blend of practitioners from the East, business professionals from the West, and academics.鈥� 鈥淚 was initially worried about joining a business school based in Hong Kong because of perceived language barriers,鈥� one student explains. 鈥淭hankfully, I never faced such a challenge because all the professors were educated from the top business schools in the United States, and as a result, their communication skills are exceptionally good.鈥� Some of the 鈥渂usiness leaders in Asia鈥� who the school boasts as faculty include WalMart China鈥檚 former president, PepsiCo Asia鈥檚 former president, and the GM of Hutchinson Whampoa鈥檚 Investment and Head Legal Counsel.

鈥淗ong Kong is the best transition point to the China market,鈥� and HKUST provides lots of help for students to get in on the action. 鈥淎s a European with work experience in North America, I wanted to become part of the Asian growth story,鈥� one student says. 鈥淲hat better place could there be than the leading Asian business school!鈥� HKUST takes students on trips to different cities and even countries in the region, such as Beijing or Singapore, to get students acquainted with the Asian style of business. The business school also stations representatives in Beijing, Shanghai, and Shenzhen. The HKUST career team constantly offers workshops, networking opportunities, one-on-one career coaching sessions, and many other services to help students begin careers.

HKUST is best 鈥渒nown for finance,鈥� and 45 percent of graduates accept a job in finance or accounting. Some students say HKUST 鈥渘eeds to improve on other career tracks.鈥� For example, there are 鈥渧ery few courses on marketing.鈥� Students also wish the school had a better brand recognition outside of Asia. 鈥淚 really think the key for the school is to build a stronger brand,鈥� one student says. 鈥淚 heard from exchange students from U.S. top schools that our classes are comparable.鈥� Eighty-one percent of students found employ- ment within three months of graduation, and their average base salary was $93,500 in U.S. dollars. Some companies that have recruited from HKUST include ANZ, Banco Santaner, Barclays, Cisco, Citi, DuPont, Google, IMS Consulting, J.P. Morgan, Li & Fung, LinkedIN, Microsoft, Nomura, Samsung, and Walmart.

HKUST boasts a very diverse student body, as the school 鈥渁ttracts students from all over the world. 鈥淥n any given day, we have at least around fifteen to twenty nationalities rep- resented in class.鈥� 鈥淣inety-seven percent of students are from overseas,鈥� and the school is a veritable 鈥淯nited Nations.鈥� This means students approach school in different ways. 鈥淲esterners are very liberal鈥� at HKUST, while 鈥渢here are many students from China, who have a somewhat more conservative approach.鈥� The school has 鈥渕ore than ten clubs and often has different activities,鈥� which makes 鈥渓ife at HKUST really interesting and fascinating.鈥� Students like to 鈥減articipate in different social events, like doing chari- ty work, mingling with students of other schools, and having dinner with alumni.鈥� 鈥淗alf of the students are more into social networking, and half are not very sociable,鈥� suggests one student. Students spend most of their time doing work, and 鈥渟leeping fewer than five hours is common鈥� in the fall.

鈥淭he campus is amazing鈥� and 鈥渓ocated next to the bay,鈥� offering great views from dorm room windows. 鈥淪ports facilities available are great, including soccer pitch, track, in/ outdoor pools, in/outdoor basketball, tennis, ping pong, squash, weight lifting, wall climbing, volleyball, and badminton.鈥� Some students say dorm 鈥渇acilities are worn out,鈥� and business students should try to live off campus. 鈥淭he student housing is meant for undergraduates. There are only two bathrooms shared by the whole floor.鈥� MBA stu- dents will begin to move to a larger and nicer dorm in 2014.
