Academics
With its convenient location, 鈥渆xperienced professors,鈥 and 鈥渓ow tuition,鈥 the MBA program at Eastern Michigan University鈥檚 College of Business offers a great return on investment. 鈥淒esigned for working professionals,鈥 EMU鈥檚 courses are offered in the evenings, on the weekends, via the Internet, and through hybrid online/classroom delivery. The format is totally flexible, and students can take as little as one class per semester and up to a full course load. While balancing a career and an education can be tricky business, students say EMU 鈥減rovides great support for students and overall great atmosphere of learning.鈥
At EMU, 鈥渕ost of the professors are amazing,鈥 with close to 100 percent of the school鈥檚 faculty holding the highest degree available in their field. Students admit that 鈥測ou get a couple bad professors/classmates along the way, but there is little if anything to complain about.鈥 Graduate class sizes average fewer than twenty, which gives students the opportunity to 鈥渨ork directly with professors who provide PhD-level class time, rather than having to work through a teaching assistant.鈥 The result is a dynamic classroom environment, in which discussion is encouraged and 鈥減rofessors challenge you to develop your own opinions regarding global business and economies.鈥 In addition to the professors, there is 鈥渓ots of diverse work experience among the students,鈥 adding even more depth to the academic environment. Real-world applications are stressed in the classroom, though students would like to see coursework incorporate 鈥渕ore up-to-date case studies鈥 and hands-on instruction. One student suggests, 鈥淓MU needs to strengthen their program with real business partnerships where students can apply what they learn and gain real job experience.鈥
The MBA curriculum is comprised of foundation coursework (which can be waived for students with previous education in business), core coursework, electives, and an area of specialization, which combine for a program of study between thirty-six鈥揻ifty-four credit hours. Catering to its diverse student body, EMU offers specializations in a variety of business fields, including business analytics, e-business, entrepreneurship, internal auditing, international business, management, and nonprofit management, as well as the opportunity to pursue a general MBA with no particular specialization (in that case, students can take a range of elective coursework to meet the units required for graduation).
