Academics
For students searching for an undergraduate experience at a 鈥減rivate and prestigious鈥 institution with 鈥渁n inviting atmosphere鈥 that鈥檚 鈥減riced competitively,鈥 York College of Pennsylvania has much to offer. The 鈥渟mall, cozy, and spirited鈥 school provides access to 鈥渟mall classes with a focus on practicality鈥 and 鈥済reat laboratories and research opportunities at a low cost.鈥 One student declares,鈥 Our school is community driven school with many activities and programs but also with a lot of emphasis on professionalism.鈥 Students praise their school鈥檚 鈥渆xcellent nursing, engineering, and secondary-ed programs.鈥 York鈥檚 strengths also include 鈥渁 strong support system within each major as well as tutors at the Center for Teaching and Learning to provide additional help when needed.鈥 Another asset is the school鈥檚 鈥渧ery involved and caring academic faculty.鈥 One student raves, 鈥淗ow can you not like professors that care whether or not you are equipped to succeed after graduation?鈥 Numerous students agree that 鈥淭eacher/ student relationships are important and easy to establish because of small class size.鈥 At this school, 鈥淧rofessors view students as adults and friends, not students who know nothing.鈥 Although students are generally satisfied with York鈥檚 education programs and faculty, many of the commuter students have one gripe. Those students point out, 鈥淭hey take the commuter parking for everything on campus and leave us with nowhere to park.鈥
Student Body
Many of York鈥檚 鈥渆asy going and approachable鈥 students 鈥渨ere raised in suburban or rural communities in Pennsylvania or the surrounding states鈥 and it 鈥渟eems like a good chunk of students are from New Jersey...鈥 In general, 鈥淢ost students are from bluecollar or middle-class families.鈥 This may explain the 鈥渄own to earth鈥 vibe among the student population. One student points out, 鈥淭he stereotypical college hippies or cool kids I've met from more cosmopolitan schools don't exist at York. You see goatees and Wranglers rather than Ray-Bans and J. Crew.鈥 While students admit that the student body is 鈥渘ot very diverse due to geographic area鈥 and that 鈥渋t's a very homogeneous community,鈥 they prolaim that students are 鈥渟elf-motivated and accepting of other students regardless of background.鈥 鈥淭he typical York student is involved in maybe 2-3 clubs, cares about grades but is not overly nerdy about it, and knows the value of money,鈥 says one student. When it comes to extracurricular life, 鈥淢ost fit in by being a part of Greek life or a club.鈥
Campus Life
York鈥檚 鈥渂eautiful campus鈥 offers students a 鈥渟mall school feel, big school experience鈥 through 鈥渓ots of school-based activities and clubs.鈥 The student-run Campus Activities Board (CAB) 鈥渙rganizes events during the week and every weekend to keep the students entertained. Some events include; hypnotists, bands, poets, plays, free food, movies and sports events.鈥 With its Division III teams and 鈥済reat athletic facilities,鈥 it is no surprise that 鈥渟porting events at York, especially soccer and boys basketball, are very popular.鈥 Students who prefer alcohol to sports should note that York is a dry campus and that 鈥渢he Campus Safety officials do their best to crack down on underage drinking and drinking on campus.鈥 However, students admit that 鈥淭here is a lot of partying off-campus on the weekends鈥︹ Although 鈥淢ost people go to off campus homes on Jackson Street to party,鈥 students warn that the area next to the campus is 鈥渘ot always the safest place to be at night.鈥 The city of York itself has 鈥渓ots of eating places, movie theaters, two malls in the area and some big cities are roughly half an hour away.鈥 For those seeking some big city action, 鈥淭he school sponsors many bus trips to cities such as Baltimore, Philly and NYC.鈥
