Academics

鈥淢edium-sized鈥 Winthrop University in South Carolina 鈥渋s a public university, which is reflected in its diverse student body, but it has a private university feel in terms of the small size of classes, the caliber of the faculty, and the beauty of the campus.鈥 There are many programs and options here. Business and education majors are especially popular. As at most schools, professors are 鈥渉it or miss.鈥 Some are 鈥渁lmost never available.鈥 Many others are 鈥渆asy to approach鈥 and 鈥減assionate about what they teach.鈥 鈥淚鈥檝e wanted to clap at the end of classes before because they鈥檝e been so phenomenal,鈥 gloats one student. Complaints include registration. 鈥淕etting the classes you need is a struggle.鈥 Some of the required general education courses 鈥渃ould be thrown away,鈥 too. One student tells us, 鈥渢he only downfall to our school is financial aid. Almost everyone I know, including myself, has had problems with them.鈥 Administrators 鈥渓ike to dance around questions without actually answering them,鈥 and 鈥渋t is very common for students to be passed (circularly) from one department back to another when trying to resolve an administrative problem.鈥

Student Body

鈥淭here are significantly more females than males鈥 here. 鈥淢any students come from small towns,鈥 but 鈥渄iversity is something Winthrop can brag about.鈥 鈥淭he majority of the students leans slightly toward the right politically and, as is typical for the South, most are religious in some way,鈥 reflects a sophomore. 鈥淗owever, that鈥檚 not to say that you won鈥檛 find some extreme liberals and atheists on campus.鈥 鈥淭he typical student is a laid-back Southern kid鈥 and is 鈥渕ildly preppy鈥 but there is a little bit of everybody鈥斺渇rom hip-hoppers to punk rockers, frat guys to computer nerds.鈥 鈥淔rom artistic individuals to cookie-cutter education majors, everyone has their own dynamic.鈥 鈥淚t鈥檚 probably the least cliquey campus I have been to,鈥 relates a senior.

Campus Life

鈥淭here鈥檚 nothing to do in the city of Rock Hill鈥 but the bustle of Charlotte, North Carolina is a mere 鈥20 minutes away鈥 if you have a car. Back on the 鈥渧ery nice and relaxing campus,鈥 there is an 鈥渁wesome鈥 fitness center. The men鈥檚 basketball team has won several conference titles in recent years and 鈥渂rings everyone together.鈥 There is also 鈥渁 cultural event requirement鈥 that requires students to attend a few events each year. Many students seem to like it. 鈥淭hursday nights are big nights鈥 for the party scene, but 鈥渨eekends are pretty dead,鈥 because 鈥渕ost students that are from the state go home for the weekends.鈥 Extracurricular activities 鈥渁re a must if you want to have a social life.鈥 Fraternities and sororities are relatively popular, and the students involved in them are 鈥渙bsessed.鈥 鈥淭he cafeteria food is definitely lacking鈥 and there is 鈥渁n overpopulation problem鈥 here. Winthrop is growing, which is nice and all, but 鈥渟omething needs to be done about housing and parking if you鈥檙e going to invite that many students.鈥
