Academics
Boasting the 鈥渂est known nursing program in the state,鈥 the University of Maine-Fort Kent relies on 鈥渄edicated professors鈥 and 鈥渁 positive learning atmosphere鈥 for its 鈥渧ery community-based learning system.鈥 Because this 鈥渋s not a huge school,鈥 it is easy to have personal interaction with your professors. 鈥淢any will stop on the street and talk to you or sit at the lunch table and chat about life.鈥 While most students find their teachers 鈥渁cademically and personally helpful,鈥 some complain they 鈥渞ely too heavily on students grasping the context without input or direction from their own lectures or plans.鈥 Overall, though, the 鈥渋ncredible鈥 academic experience is bolstered by professors who 鈥渕ake sure we are working hard to succeed in their classroom.鈥 In addition to its strong nursing program, the school鈥檚 location makes study in the environmental sciences ideal. Overall, this is a school that 鈥渇ocuses a great deal on diversity and enriching student lives with culturally enriching experiences.鈥
Student Body
鈥淭here are not always a lot of things to do鈥 when your school is 鈥渁 little out of the way鈥 鈥 which is to say, 鈥渙n the Canadian border鈥 and well away from any large-town environment. That is, unless you enjoy outdoor activities. In that case, 鈥渢he school in general is a beautiful campus with a community full of activities, if you are looking and open-minded.鈥 Hiking, fishing, snowmobiling, camping and more are all easily within a student鈥檚 grasp. Sports are also popular on campus, along with fitness endeavors like 鈥淶umba classes and yoga classes,鈥 as well as 鈥渁rt nights,鈥 鈥渕ovie nights,鈥 and 鈥渢ons of amazing student activities.鈥 There is a party scene, and being close to the Canadian border means some underage students take the trip north where drinking is legal for them 鈥 some complain about 鈥渢he lack of enforcing alcohol polices by college personnel鈥 鈥 but just as many other students enjoy UMFK because it is 鈥済reat for peace and quiet.鈥
Campus Life
The student body is largely local, though 鈥渨e have many international students,鈥 too, who are often 鈥渕ore easy to approach and interact with then some local.鈥 Being an outsider is hard to accomplish. 鈥淭here are not many cliques,鈥 and because of the school鈥檚 remote location and small size, 鈥渁lmost everyone knows everyone or knows of everyone.鈥 Students here tend to be smart, maybe a little reserved, but 鈥渉elpful鈥 and friendly. There is a strong Catholic undercurrent in this largely Catholic community, but 鈥渙thers couldn't care less.鈥 And that鈥檚 fine, because 鈥渁 typical student at UMFK usually gets a long with anyone.鈥 While 鈥渢here are a few people here and there who think it is like high school and they like the drama,鈥 most find that 鈥渋t is very hard not to find a good group of people that you relate to.鈥
