Academics
St. Catherine University truly lives up to its inspiring motto: 鈥渆ducating women to lead and influence.鈥 Fueled by small, discussion-based classes, the St. Kate鈥檚 curriculum is designed to help students become 鈥渕ore aware of who you are as a woman in the world, as well as become more aware of social justice and feminist issues.鈥 An ideal small college atmosphere, the teaching staff is knowledgeable, skilled, and caring. A senior shares, 鈥淢ost of my professors have been fabulous instructors: passionate, articulate, and willing to go to any length to help you achieve whatever level of competency you wish in their subject.鈥 While the school is Catholic affiliated, 鈥渞eligious beliefs are not forced on you鈥 as 鈥渞eligion classes tend to be about exploring your own values, or else an academic study of the Bible.鈥 In fact, the school鈥檚 predominant doctrine could be described as politically liberal, rather than religious. However, St. Kate鈥檚 doesn鈥檛 push a single philosophy, but 鈥渙ffers a setting for any woman to let her voice be heard.鈥 A current student shares, 鈥淚'm most comfortable there, most free鈥攄espite the fact that many of my viewpoints do not match with the liberal theology that CSC believes in.鈥
Student Body
鈥淭he typical St. Kate's student tends to be liberal, have feminist values, [and] wants to work towards social justice in some way.鈥 These students form the majority, however, 鈥渢hrough its Weekend College program, the college serves a lot of older women returning to school, for a great mix of ideas.鈥 St. Kate鈥檚 also draws women 鈥渨ith a spectrum of disabilities,鈥 as well as 鈥渨omen of color both from the US and abroad, varying economic status, a wide range of ages, sexual orientation and anything else that could possibly vary.鈥 On top of that, you鈥檒l find a range of hobbies and interests, from 鈥渨omen who love to knit or play video games, to women who love to play sports or go out on the town.鈥 On this worldly campus, 鈥渕ost students are socially and environmentally aware, and lean to the left regarding political views.鈥 The school鈥檚 Catholic affiliation also generates 鈥渟ome conservative religious representation,鈥 but students note that, 鈥渢he faculty is generally accepting and supportive of the GLBT population.鈥
Campus Life
"Located in St. Paul, Minnesota, St. Kate鈥檚 students get the best of both worlds: a quiet campus life complimented by the cosmopolitan attractions of the Twin Cities. A freshman explains, 鈥淧eople really enjoy St. Kate's because, being on campus, you have a nice sense of a small, tightly woven community but you can step off campus into a life of endless possibilities and fun.鈥 For resident students, 鈥渢he St. Kate鈥檚 Activities Team plans movies, dinners, outings, concerts and many other fun things for students to do during the day and evening.鈥 However, students admit that, 鈥渃ampus life is pretty quiet鈥 so 鈥渕ost girls find other places than here to socialize.鈥 The Twin Cities are a great backdrop for college, with lots of cultural and recreational activities. In particular, 鈥淭he arts community is amazing; there鈥檚 always something going on and at a relatively decent price.鈥 What鈥檚 more, 鈥淲ith four other four-year colleges close by in St. Paul, one鈥檚 social life need not be dull.鈥
