Academics

鈥淢idsized鈥 and affordable Radford University is a 鈥渧ery student-oriented鈥 public school in southwest Virginia that offers a pretty vast array of majors. Students call our attention to the business, nursing, education, and interior design programs in particular. 鈥淭he professors here would have to be Radford鈥檚 greatest strength,鈥 says a communication major. Many faculty members are 鈥渧ery personable, affable, and helpful.鈥 They 鈥渨ant to teach.鈥 鈥淭hey鈥檙e easy to get in touch with and easy to talk to and ask questions,鈥 adds a sociology major. Also, 鈥渃lasses are smaller, which makes it easier to get one on one attention.鈥 However, 鈥済eneral education classes can be excruciating鈥 and the faculty is not great across the board. 鈥淲hen they鈥檙e just reading from PowerPoint presentations, it sucks,鈥 says a psychology major. 鈥淎nd that happens too often.鈥 Registration is 鈥渢errible鈥 but Radford reportedly has 鈥済reat people making the decisions.鈥 鈥淥verall, the administration is generally pretty helpful and usually very accessible.鈥

Student Body

Radford is home to 鈥渓ots of Virginians鈥 and 鈥渁 lot of females鈥 but 鈥渘ot many minorities.鈥 鈥淭here are students who dress somewhat different from the norm鈥 and a few 鈥渉ippie kids鈥 but this is a 鈥渧ery preppy鈥 campus and most students are 鈥測our typical college kids.鈥 鈥淚鈥檇 like to think there are more atypical people but they are few and far between,鈥 admits a senior. Students describe themselves as 鈥渦sually pretty friendly鈥 and 鈥渇un to hang around.鈥 Some students take academics very seriously. Others are 鈥渘ot serious about school鈥 and simply 鈥渕anage to coast through.鈥 Socially, Radford is 鈥渃lique oriented.鈥 鈥淭he size of our school allows everyone to be known by someone, but no one knows everyone,鈥 reflects a profound senior.

Campus Life

In a nutshell, 鈥渋ntramural sports, Greek life, and partying鈥 pretty much sum up life at Radford. The 鈥渆xtremely gorgeous鈥 and 鈥渂eautifully manicured鈥 campus is located in 鈥渁 small quaint town鈥 in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains. 鈥淭he area is rather boondockish鈥 but the river near campus provides 鈥渆xcellent鈥 recreational opportunities. 鈥淭here are plenty of clubs and organizations,鈥 too. There鈥檚 also 鈥渁 great student center with bowling, pool tables, a movie theater, and other things.鈥 It may well be that 鈥渕ost of the time the rumors are not even true鈥 but 鈥淩adford is often touted as a party school.鈥 鈥淒runken escapades鈥 are pretty common and 鈥淕reek Life is a big deal.鈥 Some students say that 鈥渋t can be hard sometimes to get into parties鈥 if you don鈥檛 pledge. Others disagree. 鈥淚f you don鈥檛 want to go Greek, you don鈥檛 have to ever step foot in a frat house but you can still have a great time,鈥 reports a junior. Many students often travel to nearby Blacksburg for even bigger parties at Virginia Tech as well. You can avoid the party scene altogether if you want. However, you 鈥渉ave to search a little harder for people to associate with or things to do that don鈥檛 involve mass alcohol consumption.鈥
